Premium Members Rob Vuona SOC Posted January 22, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 22, 2014 Hi Guys, The boys from Small HD were kind enough to allow me to take the New DP7 Daybright monitor out on another trip around the planet on the Amazing Race. As you may or may not know the Race is a perfect testing ground for monitors because we are always on the go from 110 degrees (43 C) to -5 F (-20C) and always in very different light conditions. 12 countries, 5 continents all traveled in 3 weeks. I'll be brief since you have all read about this monitor before. First looks, this monitor in my opinion, is right in the correct weight range and the perfect size 7", once you figure out the menu system it is very useful and easy. Obviously the biggest thing everyone wants to know is could it be viewed in the sun. Not only could I view it in the sun, i could self focus in the sun with the peaking function built in the monitor, without a lens hood. Obviously with the sun directly reflecting you lose the middle of the reflection but thats true with every monitor. It truly was a great monitor, it never failed me in all the different conditions. Granted its not water proof but I did use it in light rain and it stayed working, I used it in the snow at altitude and in the sand at the beach and in all scenarios it was awesome. I would highly recommend it for any operator that needs a one stop monitor for all sources. Not to mention the guys over at Small HD are great and are willing to listen to feedback. They did recently enabled a LUT system to get your own grading live on the monitor and outputs for Log feed. http://www.smallhd.com/luts/index-t2.html This monitor is definitely on my "want!" list. Rob, how did you find the color reproduction on the monitor. Some of their older monitors had funky things going on with the skin tones. Premium Members Rob Vuona SOC Posted January 23, 2014 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted January 23, 2014 @ Dean . . . . . • I mounted it on Both my Rigs and the first one just used a 1/4x20 screw on the bottom and the second one I just used the 1/4x20 screw holes on the side and made spacers for my yolk mount. • As for screen protector / It came with an anti glare covering • The digital Level built in is functional but not nearly as responsive as the tiffen external digital level, future hopes to it talking to internal sensors in the rig . . . . .I'm woking on that one • As you read the built in SD card recorder is not yet activated, but I feel that won't be long off • As far as I can tell it reads all formatts @ Andrew . . . . . • I don't remember if the AB plate I had powered it directly or had a cable, I think it powered it directly • As for the color reproduction, it was spot on. Volker Kreinacke Posted January 24, 2014 Report Share Posted January 24, 2014 Hi Guys just got my DP7 PRO HB a couple of days ago . Stoked, after using a green monitor until now. Have used it now on a three day commercial outdoors in South Africa. We had rain, sun and overcast conditions. Its viewable under all conditions and I havent put the antiglare covering which comes with it on yet, neither did I use a hood. But for the glaring south african sun a hood might just add to the viewing pleasure so its on my list. But its def not necessary. I have the monitor with the AB Battery plate just to add some weight if necessary and it doesnt need an additional Hirose/D tab cable since Andrew was asking. Watch the video tutorial-mounting AB plate- on their support website The built in level is a bit disappointing and in my opinion not responsive enough for steadicam. Great for the occasional handheld shot though. The level indicator sometimes gets stuck in the corners and it always took a while to come loose again. Maybe its just a fault on my monitor, still have to watch/investigate. I didnt dare to use the monitor without protection in the rain/drizzle, it looks like there are some areas where water can come in, it would be good to hear from the manufacturers whether they added some waterproofing to all the menu wheels/buttons ,electronics, etc Its very solidly built, especially with the battery adapter plate on the back and I dont think one has to be worried about mechanical damage. Love the menu, lots of options, looking forward to the recording update. Monitor takes a while to boot. Very happy with my decision to go with the Small HD. Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted January 24, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 24, 2014 Hi Rob, I was on a non steadi job a couple of weeks ago and my 1st had one and although super bright, and very crisp, the front cover on it was quite reflective once you werent right in front of it. Maybe his was the OLED? He said it was the Superbright.. Or is there a glossy clear front and then an AR one? For the folks at SmallHD, it is Camilo Jarquin's 7" Monitor here in Miami. If you take that off and apply the screen protector that they supply with the monitor its much less reflective, but still not perfect. After a little modification to the back AB plate (moved it up to reveal the rear 1/4.20 hole), I'm all set with a nice rigid mount. I'd love to see some better leveling software updated, and perhaps a "trigger" fan switch option??? Also, larger menu fonts. But overall, I really like this monitor! I wish it came in a slightly larger screen size, I'll just keep going bigger before I wear glasses... Can you see the total denial I'm in... Thanks Rob and Small HD folks!
