I'm more interested in the articulating armature that connected the Movi to Larry's rig than I am in the Movi itself. There will be better versions of Movi type stabilizers but connecting them to the rig in a useful way is what I want to know about. Whats the story there?

Grayson,

Sorry to say that those are totally custom bits that Larry built up for back when he was using individual KS-6 and KS-8 gyros. He has all manner of extensions and clamps and 45 degree angle blocks which were originally designed for gyro mounting. All built in his shop on his mill, and designed by the man himself! Nothing a machinist couldn't work up in a reasonable amount of time though.

Here is the link to the Larry movi footage

as well as conversation between Garret and Freefly. Tom...wow...very cool! I have so many questions. Do you have a closeup of the bracket? Also how is he monitoring, for some of this stuff. Also it still seems that a second operator is necessary for precise moves. Did Larry have any conversations with them about putting some kind of joystick on the gimbal handle? Edited by Michael Hauer

Now that I have had a chance to look at the video on something bigger than my phone, I see the bracketry. Easy enough. The dual monitors. Easy enough. There is another person operating the Movi it seems and it looks like he is doing it with a set of wheels. Awesome. Is that custom? Its what Movi should offer anyway. A way to operate the head from a traditional set of remote style wheels instead of a joystick. A joystick is great for a gimbal mount so the steadicam op can do it all himself but for two man operating, wheels would be a great option. I'm looking forward to a bigger payload for the Movi. 15 to 20 lbs would be great.

We tested three PAG batteries on my CineLive with an Alexa during NAB at the Angenieux booth.

  • They are slightly lighter than my Dionic HCs
  • With three batteries we got a little over two hours run time powering Alexa, Preston, Bolt Pro and Transvideo monitor
  • The stacking is a really nice option as it also let us double stack the batteries on the sled while sitting on the dock in a "standby mode" so to speak
  • The housings look fairly rugged but will they handle the "bounce test" structurally without breaking off a stacking tab or jarring the internal electronics?
  • Retail price is $499
  • I like the LED % display
  • You can still set the rig down on the batteries but those stacking tabs are going to leave a mark. Everything AB is rugged stuff but I don't think the batteries or plates are really meant to be weight bearing

I spoke to Paul Dudeck about HCs being replaced and that is a year or so off. If we all restock our battery supplies with current style batteries in the next year it buys us a year or two depending on your usage. We're a tiny segment of the battery market but too bad they didn't tap a wide range of their customers before taking a very practical housing and turning it into a giant designer shampoo bottle shape. Once the dust has settled from NAB I'm going to contact Paul again and discuss whether they would still be able to continue with the current housing design either on special order or in limited quantities.

I guess I will re-cell my HC's once they stop selling them. Has someone used http://www.ritterbattery.com How is their service and quality?

I have heard nothing but good things about him.

I am surprised nobody so far has mentioned what I think will be one of the coolest things to have come out at NAB though! The Wagner Level Assistant. Automatic compensation for pendulum effects. Will it work? Who knows! But it's cool sounding! http://steadicam.com/userimages/Steadicam_WXB-ss.pdf

I would like to know more about it too. Nobody had the chance to test it?
