Staying in Shape

After 17 years of strapping on 60 to 70 pounds of camera gack I've come to the realization that our craft may require a little more prep and maintenance than what we give it.

2 years ago I had meniscus surgery and was forced to rehab the knee. In the process I realized I had completely neglected a vital part of what propels us..........hips. Who works out their hips? I don't....ever. until I experienced some issues with my knee after the rehab. At the request of my doctor I started working my hip flexors and was amazed at the stability and power I gained by doing simple exercises that Jack Lelane used to do on TV back in the day in his one piece jump suit.

So simple but so effective. Not to mention the flexibility and strength.....so do some basic hip exercises.

Your knees, calves, thighs, butt and back will thank you.

a vital part of what propels us...

ive been doing martial arts all my life and have been more involved in jiu jitsu for the last few years.

consistently across the many martial arts, especially with throws and grappling, hips are the most addressed part of the body, maybe in all athletic activities. all the power for driving through another body comes from our hips.

glad youve noticed such great results with such simple exercise!

do you also stretch in a one piece?

Good topic Ramon and I must say you looked quite dashing in that one-piece jumpsuit at NAB yesterday!

On a more seriously note in the last six months of rehabbing post-ACL reconstruction I've found a lot of things need work especially the hips. Yoga has been a big help to return back to flexibility and I really wish I had found yoga 25 years ago as I'd be in a lot better condition physically for flexibility and recovery.

I have been going to a stretching class created for modern dancers that allows you to no only lengthen your body, but also control your balance and alignment.

A lot of it consists in balancing your hips, rotators and trochanter in order to have a smoother stride when walking. It's been great and it has been helping me with my back issues.

I go once a week to one of the two creators of the Klein technique classes in New York. http://barbaramahler.net/classes/ Hit me up if you want to try.

just do squat ~ 15 then rest for 60 secs, do 15 rounds daily (or until you can't do anymore. I usually do this after practice so I know my hips are DONE for the day)~

it works on the most muscle of your body compare to any other exercises~

best of all, its free

Skiing and Hockey, Minus the crashes and checks, keeps me ready for all kinds of steadicam action, especially those 4 hour long live shows and rehearsal before hand . . . . . =)

Where do you play hockey in LA? I have been wanting to find a league since I moved out here.
