Premium Members brett.mayfield Posted June 4, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 4, 2014 hey yall i am flying Los Angeles (LAX) to London (LHR) and then on to New Castle (NCL) I typically bring a few stills cameras with me and I like to shoot ilford delta 3200. domestic flights are easy, i never have a hard time with hand check. how about flying internationally? how about at LHR on the way back? just wondering if anyone has any experience with hand-checking film for international flights. brett. Premium Members Marc R. Berger Posted June 4, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 4, 2014 I always put them in lead bags and ask for hand-cheking. On international flights you have the right for hand-checking for your photographic films. But sometimes they still want to put it in trough their x-ray with the words "film-safe"...then the lead bag helps to weaken the impact on the films. Never had problems with films until 3200 like that until today.
Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted June 4, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 4, 2014 Had exposed negative (400 or 800 asa) put through an airport x-ray machine and ruined on a film some years ago, despite the markings that said DO NOT X-RAY. Don't let them do it. Interestingly enough, production was able to trace the exact machine the film was put through in shipping to the lab because each machine has a unique radiation signature. Funny story actually: It was the last day of shooting in Denver and I was sent to the airport to shoot a G2 private jet landing and a rich guy disembarking from it. Shooting done and we were to fly back to LA on the same jet. Getting ready to depart, comfortably seated, freshly baked warm cookie being served to me by attractive stewardess when the call came in that all of last night's footage was ruined by the x-ray machine and we had to stay and shoot plates all night. Noooooooooo!
Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted June 4, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 4, 2014 I would buy the film there and at least get the negatives developed there before taking it back, it is the safest way....
Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted June 4, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 4, 2014 They say "Safe up to 800ISO" at some airports. So I'd be scared crapless of 3200 going thru a machine. PS, In the US, you have the right to insist it be hand checked, but outside of the US, Good luck. If the guards at an airport don't want to, they just wont. be safe and arrange it be developed where your gonna be. Just my opinion

Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted June 9, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 9, 2014 The London airport is actually the one place I could never get them to hand check film. It has been a while but I wouldn't bet on it there. ~Jess
