Rich Steel Posted August 26, 2005 Report Share Posted August 26, 2005 Hi Folks, Got a phone call from John Ward last week wondering if I could help out in his Masterclass at the Film Festival here in Edinburgh. My thanks to Howard at MK-V for putting my name forward. John is one of those "Old School" Gents who's seen it all and done it all and found helping him very inspirational. It smacked home, just how much time you have to put into this profession to truly become a Master. I've been doing steadicam for just over 6 years now but doesn't even come close to the time John has been in the business (over 40 years) boy and man. Although he's hung up his steadicam spurs he's still a pro-active cinematographer and still working with the best of the best of the best. I can only hope that my future career as an operator is as long and as prestijious as Johns, although being based in Scotland somewhat lessens my chances I think. As for work, I tend to get most from DOP's and Directors I've worked with in the past so it's all down to getting in the loop, so to speak. I still want to get into features but I rather like the lifestyle I've carved out for myself up here so I'm not willing to move 'dan saf'. That I think kinda Kiboshes any chance of getting into features as there's not much getting shot up here. It's a bit of a cottage industry up north and unless you want to do football (which I don't) week in and out during the football season then there's not really much getting shot on the rig. Work wise for myself is the ocassional TV Advert, some corporate and every once in a while I get a call for Drama work. Not fantastically busy but making a living and enjoying life. By the way, the video you shot in Manchester is pretty trick. Did you use Twixtor or something to get that "time slice" feel at the start of the subway sequence? I kinda did the time slice to pay respects to howard and mk-v for the work in the matrix. I've always got greate insperation from films like the matrix and with the song having a cheeky sample at the start from the film, i couldn't resist. I too am based up north, however i work mainly in the music industry based of course i london where my brother lives (thanks for the cold floor to sleep on :o). I refuse to live in london at the moment and belive their is a thriving media industry in the north. The only problem is that the big productions round here seem not able to afford full steadicam rates, and as a result don't even consider steadicam due to the cost. Sad to say the least but i'm verry new at steadicaming for a living and am in no way in the loop yet. Saying that i'm up for assiting if you ever need a hand. I feel that at the momnet i am runnig up against a brick wall with my flyer setup. I am getting pretty good (much better than the 'Slow Down' music video i did. However untill better smaller cameras are more commen place in bigger productions(Why oh why does nobody make a small cam with 1/2inch ccd's yet) ? i'm gona have to go full size to earn a propper living. To be honest i'm a little nervous hiring a full size rig after all this time with my lighter 'Flyer'. I remeber at the workshop struggling after only a few mins with a fully loaded master's setup. (If you're reading in - you know who you are! (nice work as usual the other evening on the Military Tattoo) Matt, I drove through Leeds today on my way back home from a job (I'm based in Manchester). I've got a Master Series- if I'm in/near Leeds again with the rig in the car I'll let you know and you can take it for a spin. I have a weight cage that will take your camera.
