Looking for a good on-board monitor. Recommendations?

Currently shooting a few indies right now and was looking into buying an on-board/field monitor for myself.

I would preferably want to go with something that gives good light outside, so i'm assuming i'll need something with a good amount of nits.

I've heard TVLogic carries a sun bright monitor, but haven't checked one out before. Anyone have experience with this?

Also, has anyone heard of Bon monitors? I hear they carry outdoor monitors as well?

Thanks!

Hi Henry,

If I'm not mistaken, BON also makes Ikan products, which is a brand more people are familiar with.

I have the BON 1100nit FM-072SCH monitor myself, an outdoor monitor. I'm pleased with it. It has all the connections in a HD monitor you'd expect. HD-SDI x 2, HDMI in+out, HD-SDI out, USB, etc.

It has 3/8 mounting holes on the bottom and the top, and you can buy a stand for it.

It has a waveform and false color. The only thing I'm missing, is a anti-reflective screen. But that is seldom a problem. Just a few times I miss it. I think the monitor is listed to $2K now. So it's in the lower pricing range within the daylight viewable monitors.

You can power it through a Sony NP battery, or A/B, V-lock or get a power cable.

But don't take my word for it. When you're buying anything that costs more than $1K, I'd advise you to check out the unit personally.

When I ordered my BON monitor through a US dealer, I had a poor experience. Not sure if it was the US dealer or BON who kept screwing up, but the dealer blamed BON. I guess I have to take their word for it. Anyway, even though the product is good and I'm more than happy with it, I won't be ordering any more from BON.

You can get the Ikan md7 from B&H for $2100.00 and have great customer service from Ikan in Texas. I was not willing to pay $700 more for the lighter housing of the TV Logic even though I already own two of their monitors and have also gotten great customer service. The next price point is $3000 for the smallhd high bright.

I think I'm ready to make my decision.

One more thing Lars, how long ago was this? (The service, etc from Bon)

This was May of 2013. I prepaid my monitor, which is normal. But BON delivered it 4 weeks overdue. Which can happen. But I bought the unit for a specific reason, so I kept calling the US dealer about it. They said that they never got any info from BON whatsoever, about why it was overdue or when to expect it. This just pissed me off and I told myself never to use BON again. I guess they have so many customers in South-Korea they can just overlook foreign clients altogether...

Oh, an operator I know here in Norway had similar experiences with their customer service. They really need to beef that up if they expect to grow overseas.

Hello everyone.

My name is Michael. I actually work with PostiumUSA, the now main distributor for BON products here in the states. I jumped on board with PostiumUSA right before one of the Expos here in California in June.

I'm not on this forum as a seller or someone that's trying to push BON products; rather, I'm an amateur filmmaker and video enthusiast myself, so no worries.

I literally jumped into the mix and had some people calling in, complaining about service and/or products, and frankly, I can't blame them. Supposedly, my boss wants to change that so, I guess we'll see.

To Lars:

I'm sorry to hear that you were not well attended to. Your case would have frustrated the hell out of me and I'm amazed at your patience to wait so long for adequate responses, etc. I don't know what the sitch is like there in Europe but hopefully it's gotten better since then.

To Henry:

Where are you located? We just opened up shop not too long ago in southern California. If you're a local, I'd be happy to help you demo some of our monitors. Just let me know.
