Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted October 3, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 3, 2005 This subject has been of my interest for a long time, but everytime I have tried a DVR like these (but not the Archos) I was put off by the response time that it needs to actually go into recording. That takes sometimes even 25 seconds after pressing the first REC-button! Also playback takes a lot of fiddling through menus and therefore a lot of time. So how is the Archos in that respect? I want it to react like my little DV-camera with video-input: max. delay 1 second.

Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted October 21, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 21, 2005 This week in Munich, I saw a harddisk based gadget, camera inside, radio tuner, usb (or firewire) and AV in and out! no extra connectors needed, can act as a harddisk for your computer and has a camera function, video RECORDER and playback function and many more stuff. No details on the specs, but the price was already very encouraging.... 200 Euro! I will try to play with it later and tell you more. The Ipod can output analog via an extra cable, but the only way to get video(or audio) into it is via firewire. Would be useful on a firewire out video camera, but if you had a video camera you wouldn't need an on board recorder!! Sorry I think I meant usb, not firewire not sure which one it has but you definatley can't input an analog signal!! At least that's what the guy at the Apple shop said....... he's not always up to speed all the stuff in the shop!

No in order for the viPod to display video you have to Author it on a Mac or PC and compress it with Quicktime 7. There is no just plugging a cable in it and having it record. Premium Members maxfischer Posted December 5, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 5, 2005 Just revisiting this topic in the ever-changing world of technology! Now that the Ipod video is out, does it look like there will be any adapters for making it work as an on-board recorder? I'd love to have only one device for both work (as an on board recorder) and play (as an MP3 player), would the Archos 500 be better? Now that the Ipod video is out, does it look like there will be any adapters for making it work as an on-board recorder? I'd love to have only one device for both work (as an on board recorder) and play (as an MP3 player), would the Archos 500 be better? Max I've been using a Sony Micro DV camcorder as an on-board recorder for several years now. The picture quality is great. My only complaints have been that to get to the recording start screen involves about 5 or 6 pushes of a button to navigate your way there. I know, there are worse things in life. Also having to rewind the tape to review sometimes takes an extra 10 seconds you don't have between shooting takes. It was for this reason mostly that I decided to get an ARCHOS AV 500. I found that, while it is an awsome device, there seemed to be just as much menu navigation and button pushing as with my previous recorder. In addition the picture quality was not as good as with the Micro DV recorder. I am currently using a Panaflex Lite-weight with a B&W video tap. This is not a flicker free tap and the recorded video tends to pulse, probably because of the sampling rate on the recorder. Thought about swaping the tap for a color one, but I like the B&W tap for it's brightness amd contrast, especially in low light situations. I decided to return the 500 (thank you Sharper Image-60 day return policy!) and I bought an AV 420 online. This was the previous model. While the screen is 4x3 as opposed to 16x9 the menu navigation is easier than the 500, aided by 3 buttons on the face dedicated to certain function necessary for this use. There are more accessories available. I bought an extra docking station, cut off the cable and made a single cable with video input/output that also sends in power from the PRO (had to change the voltage regulator inside the PRO to a 5v one) And it's cheaper. But I am still having the same pulsing image. I have seen this recorder working in conjunction with an Arricam LT and the image is much better, no pulse. I've gone back to the old recorder now and I am waiting for the day I get to use another camera. Meanwhile I am using the AV 420 to auto record The Daily Show every night and I get to have a few good laughs watching it on the truck during the slow times on set. I also have loaded in many MP3-s so I leave the Ipod at home.

Premium Members Tomas Szklarski Posted February 16, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 16, 2006 Hi, I have the AV700. You should be able to power it off the sled, I don't know your sled however, BUT you will need a power regulator. I ordered mine from Fred at Production cable services and it works great. I think the AV500 is 5V...but I am not sure. You can recored with out the TV docking pod thing. You need to buy the travel kit. The travel kit comes with an little adapter so you can just plug in the cable without the docking thing. Those are hard to find though. The only place that I found that had them in stock was http://www.newmp3technology.com/ If you want pictures of mine on my rig I can send them to you or if you want to know more information just let me know. -Tom

Premium Members Tomas Szklarski Posted February 16, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 16, 2006 Hey, I'd thought I would post pics for everybody to see. It's a pic showing the volt regulator and the travel adapter for the Archos. I have the MK-V lite and the plate that the archos sits on is custom made. It's made of aluminum and just painted black with some grill paint.
