Premium Members Beau Cuizon Posted October 17, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 17, 2014 So more often than not, you'll see people selling "Robert Luna" arms in the sell sections on the board...I understand that Mr. Luna was/is a highly regarded arm technician/engineer from the CP days, and that his work is revered among the Steadicam initiated...so I am curious, as someone who had never used or experienced a "Luna" arm, is there some kind of signature feel, or utility that his arms are known for? I understand that some operators prefer older arm designs with his signature tuning, verses some newer arm designs? Of course, I know I'm opening a can of worms by asking that question, but really, I'm just really trying to learn what I can about the intricacies of the Steadicam craft, and I'm interested in your experiences and opinions on the matter; how his work compares to more contemporary arm designs and abilities -- the more descriptive, the better. Luna arms are still 3A/CP arms with all their limitations and advantages and when operating properly they are the best those particular arms will ever perform due to the upgrades and beefed up pieces Robert builds into them. My first impression is that the bearings in the Luna arm are far superior and it tracks very smoothly from top to bottom. However, it does lockup in the last 10% of the boom range both up and down, which is a flaw that all 3A design arms have (CP, Luna, Glidecam Gold,...) Apart from the steadyrig silverspring arms, which have bumpers on the inside of the bones, making 100% of the boomrange useable (only arm I've never tried so I can't back up this claim). As Alan says, arms are a matter of preference, I prefer the feeling of 3A/PRO arms as apposed to the Master/Ultra/G arms. The Luna arm truly is a workhorse, it might not have the maximum capacity of the PRO or the boom range of a G70 but it does the job very well.
