Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted March 23, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 23, 2015 Hi Trinity, Welcome to the Steadicam community. Don't rush into buying a rig. I would recommend you to look into taking a workshop. There you will learn how to properly and safely operate a Steadicam from professional operators. You will also be able to learn the mechanics of the rig and what you should look for in your future rig. You can also read The Steadicam® Operator's Handbook http://smile.amazon.com/dp/024082380Xand watch the EFP DVD http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEADICAM-EFP-TRAINING-DVD-WORKSHOP-STEADYCAM-GLIDECAM-/271007608431 These two references are must have if you are serious about becoming a Steadicam Operator. A good beginner's rig for DSLR could be a Scout or a Zephyr (http://tiffen.com/steadicam/steadicam-professional-video/steadicam-professional-video-zephyr/ or a Flyer (have a look at the Marketplace to find used Steadicams these things can stay good for years) You say you want the rig to be light, while all Steadicam operators are trying to get their rig as heavy as possible (sometimes with metal weight plates) Weight gives inertia to the camera and removes a lot of undesired vibrations.

Kevin Cobello
Could a beginners rig be a pilot? That's what I bought. I know its not a scout or a zepher but it should work events we do ok. :) I Hope....
Premium Members Emmanuel Dinh Posted May 11, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 11, 2015 Of course It can ! The only limitation is the weight, up to 10 lbs : enough to fly a Sony PMW-200 or Canon XF 300 ENG, C300, 5D or BMCC. As long as you won't need to fly heavier cameras, your Pilot will do the job just as bigger rigs.
Kevin Cobello
Thanks, actually Sony PXW Z100.....
Premium Members Emmanuel Dinh Posted May 12, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 12, 2015 Then it's a good rig for you ; do not hesitate to add on-board light, HF mic (if needed) and STEADICAM weights to increase stability.
