New Transvideo Monitors at NAB 2015

Hi all. It seems our landscape of monitors we use is changing fast. Marrianne from Transvideo had mentioned the 7" Rainbow HD in another thread. Is this a new version? I for one one deem a 7" 16:9 monitor the perfect size for Steadicam. Marrianne, can you please fill us in on this monitor and compare it to your other monitors? Jens, you usually have a good idea about this stuff too?

 

Does it use their level? Is the front glass bonded?

The Rainbow HD has a regular brightness (450 nits) high brightness (900 nits) version. Non bonded, but AR coated glass.

Avenger, non gyro compensated level sensor. Image flip, frame liner, custom zoom. Slotted below the Cinemonitor line.

I use one as an onboard for operating and my x-sbl HD6 for STEADICAM.

Just bought one of the Rainbows for my backup steadicam and main- A cam on board monitor. I love that thing... 900 nits still really damn bright( its not all nits). Used it on A cam in full California sun with no hood no problem.

 

On Alec's note, I don't like there bigger monitors (although they are brighter)for the wasted screen space to me. Rainbow is great size - 7" and small form factor. Very pleased.

Try in the menu: Adjust, Profile, Linear instead of rec709 for even more visibility especially with very dark images at night....

Jens,

 

I think you read me wrong... I find the monitor GREAT. Yes I know the Profile adjustments. I think it is a terrific monitor.

Transvideo has released new firmware versions for the HD6/8 Evolution and the Starlight HD. Free of charge to download on their website.

 

Also, they are currently working on implementing suggestions on the Virtual Horizon 3 (wireless) sensor and the level display graphics in general for the HD evolution series.

Ugh. That is what I thought. I was hoping there was something new. Its time Transvideo began to take 16:9 seriously. Please, please.

I sat on the fence about the Transvideo X-SBL because of this very reason, It was also concerning to me that the S-XBL still uses an older LCD panel that isn't a viewable from all angles like the newer LCDs are. But last year after deciding I couldn't deal with my old monitor any more I took the plunge. After having it for a year now it's proven itself to be a really solid and reliable monitor in all situations from dark sets to full sunlight. Personally I put data indicators below the image to help fill up the 4:3 screen - I have battery voltage, timecode and LensData from the Cinetape. The image size, even though smaller than my last screen, seems just right now that I'm used to it and the viewing angle has never been a major issue yet, but I will concede that it is my one slight disappointment as there are times I need to change the monitor angle to work for the entirety of a shot when in low mode.

 

I've now just purchased the StarliteHD and will get to try it out next week, I have complete confidence that it's built to suit based on my experiences with the X-SBL.

 

Plus the internal level in the X-SBL just plain works!!!

Alec,

 

I urge everybody to compare monitors side by side. Having seen and owned many monitors I find the image quality on the Cinemonitor HD especially pleasing. Very little motion blurr, a host of features and a great working level sensor. Much better than my previous monitors.

I'm with Jens.

 

I find the form factor of the Transvideos perfect already. I don't like anything overlaid on the image. The 16:9 inside the 4:3 leaves the right amount of space for information like level and battery level to be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Guys, maybe I'm missing something here, but what data are you talking about putting below the 16:9? Not sure how (or why) you'd put the Cinetape info there, but most data is coming from the camera which puts out a 16:9 display, no? Sure, there is the monitor generated waveform and vetroscope, but I'd only use that if I were in the rig and DPing a doc or something. Certainly not saying they should stop making these monitors, I'm saying that I want a 7" 16:9 glass bonded 2000 NIT monitor with a level. For some reason, Travsvideo only makes their highest end monitors in 4:3 and I find the 6" too small and the 8" a bit of a sail. That is my opinion (as well as many of the people who opt to use other brands). Just saying they are missing a section of the market. Their reputation for customer service is legendary.
