also makes sense, LUTs are loaded in the long-range Rx, not the Tx, rite? I'm interested to see how teradek approaches this considering that. could load LUTs through monitor if using something like a DP7. so far though, I love the sidekicks and have been able to really surprise clients in Atlanta where there are so few 2000s anyways.

setup was extremely easy and the bolt manager worked really well, less to deal with than in the past. I'm pretty hooked.

You are correct that the LUTs are loaded into the Rx's.

Teradek is definitely interested in being a more integral part of the LUT workflow. I'm not sure how much this interests you, but we recently announced (to put it short) a LUT-box with wireless control which we've titled COLR (pronounced... color..... hah). You can find all the details here. http://teradek.com/pages/colr

With COLR, your LUT/CDL's are controlled wirelessly via Pomfort LiveGrade over a WiFi connection that COLR generates (or can join). Natively integrated and adjustments are immediate. There's an SDI and HDMI input which can come from a video source whether it be directly from a camera or on the receiving end of a Bolt. Then shoots out the graded image over SDI and HDMI.

An immediate use is for a DIT distributing to village and a variety of monitors that often times don't have integrated LUTs. Has a similar built-in up/down/cross convertor like we find in the Bolts so monitor compatibility is strong. The COLR boxes can be planted at the monitor with a Bolt Rx, ideally removing another cable with the whole on-set workflow from cart to village.

Of course, by creating these LUTs and presets, they can be easily loaded onto the Bolt Rx's as well.

Curiously enough, COLR is also being implemented as an on-camera device as well. It's no larger than a deck of cards. It also has a Gigabit ethernet port which can able used as a gateway for camera control. The most immediate application is with a RED and using the FoolControl app. But we're seeing more and more cameras being released with this as a protocol for camera control. I believe the Alexa Mini has one as well.

Anyway, just a look into what Teradek is doing in the LUT world. And it's all a part of the "connected set" initiative as we aim to synchronize the on-set workflow. And yes, Bolt included!

I just started a show this week, and while I have yet to use either of my new Sidekicks on set, I did put them both up during my prep to test with my two directors monitors, and they worked great and will be welcome additions to my kit. My only complaint would be the Anton Bauer cages that shipped with mine, which are much too big and heavy for the size of the Sidekick, and appear to be modified standard 2000 RX cages. I'm not sure if they were a temporary fix in order to deliver the Sidekicks on time, but the size and weight of them defeats the purpose of buying a smaller/lighter RX. Teradek (and Andrew specifically) has been very willing to listen to suggestions and I'm hoping there are plans in the works to reduce the size of these AB cages.

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a smaller solution to the large dual-sided Anton Bauer cage that Teradek sells for the Sidekick. It appears to be the same AB cage designed for the standard 2000 RX that has been modified to work with the Sidekick. The large size of the cage increases the footprint of the Sidekick dramatically and somewhat defeats the purpose of the smaller RX. I realize that Teradek made a huge effort to get these units into our hands as quickly as possible and as the owner of two, I applaud the effort. At the same time, I’m not sure how long it will take Teradek to come up with and manufacture a more streamlined design for the cage, so I’m wondering if anyone has taken it upon themselves to address the size of the cage and come up with anything smaller and lighter. Thanks in advance!

Loving the Sidekick. My focus puller uses it next to camera and the 2000 receiver goes to video vIllage or portable director's monitor.

Agree with above postings....it would be wonderful to load a LUT into the Sidekick. Use that feature all the time on the 2000 receiver.

Cheers,

Norman

What's the latest on powering options for Sidekick when attached to a 7" focus monitor?

I've kept it to Ptap. I usually provide a smallhd dp7 pro with AB mount and it stays running for hours. I have put an ikan cage on it (I don't love it, but its working for now, maybe three wooden Canberra version soon) and I attach the sidekick in one of a variety of ways. I have the cages for the Teradek 2000 so I tried one out with the sidekick and I just couldn't justify the bulk and lopsided nature of the mass when its handheld for the DP/director.

the ikan requires a strange build, but it allows me to put a quick release plate on the bottom which attaches to my Benro photo tripod. much lighter and easier to deal with than a c-stand, great for company moves because it compresses easily, plus an articulating head, and i believe safer for the gear. it allows the user to snap the monitor on and off. I usually designate the 2AC to handle it so that it's secure every time.

would love another option for power though. I think that media blackout could probably conceive of something cool with the unisex plate, monster arms, who knows.

not the best photo for displaying a recent build, but its the one I've got-

Thanks for the details and photos Brett. Any solutions for the SmallHD 702?

sing and varizoom have this battery which has a DC out. surely a teradek cable could be made, I bet that the battery may have a lightweight plate available or a small mounting cafe could be machined to couple the battery and the sidekick. obviously that beans having two sets of batteries for an AC monitor, but it's a pretty lightweight solution

We've been using these kind of batteries daily for our in-house testing and at our trade shows. So far they have been pretty solid and 3-4 of these can confidently carry us through a long tradeshow (702+sidekick combo). Also sometimes we power our C300/Sony cam's simultaneously with our devices attached too.

We do sell these batteries on our site with an included barrel-2pin lemo cable.
