Wireless Video System + Tally

Recommended Posts

Hi guys :)

i'm searching for a wireless HD video transmitter with tally for a sony pdw-700 or/and sony pmw-800. I don't want a external tally light - i want to use the camera tally.

... maybe also with intercom - but not a must. I don't own a CCU for this cams.

Is there a system less than 10.000$ on the market? The range should be about 650 to 1000 feet.

Thank you and best regards!

Hello there Daniel,

What your looking for, As you described it, does not exist for your price range.

You can source a Boxx Meridian system with the broadcast receive antennas to send out the Signal, and then get the separate Data /Tally sender which will connect to the CCU in the control room and allow you to control the date on the camera as well as Iris and if wired properly, trigger the tally. But even getting a super deal on both things, your still over 10K for heavily used units, add cable runs, etc... and your closer to 20k.

if your just looking to send the signal but you control everything on the camera then a sender alone would work. Is there a reason your using the pdw-700 or pmw 800 ? are you recording in the camera?

Thank you for your reply Ozzie! :)

We use the 700 or 800 cause we have the cameras already in the company.

There is no remote control (iris, color,...) necessary ... the cameraman is controlling this manualy on the camera. So i don't want to buy a CCU. Like EB.

For me/us is important to get a tally light into the wireless camera. Right now, if we using a normal HD-SDI wireless transmitter, the camera heras only over the radio is he is on air.

Systems for wireless tally (external tally device on the camera) are also available on market but i don't now how to get the tally signal in the camera.

I saw the IDX CW-F25 - it's about 8000$ but (i think) also without tally.

Thank you a lot! :)

Hey Daniel,

Definitely feel free to give myself or any of my Teradek colleagues an email or call. As Dan Kanes mentions, the Teradek Beam may be a solution. It was created to be a wireless video transmitter with more broadcast oriented features including RS-422, Ethernet and yes, IFB. That being said I know the Beam has been utilized in many cinema scenarios as well.

One of our engineers can talk through the specifics of your cameras and how we can get tally through.

Andy@teradek.com is my email if you want to get in touch.

Matthias, we are aware of Sony utilizing a modified RS-422 protocol.

We're looking into supporting Sony's non-standard bit rate, but no promises there just yet.

Current suggestion would be to try utilizing a CNA1, but we understand it's not ideal.

That being said, we've successfully hooked up a Panasonic ENG via RS-422 to an RCP box.

The current Beam manual explains the options available, but it doesn't exactly spell out the steps to CCU/Camera connection.

Check out page 13/14 for the options. You can download it here.

It seems like it's a case by case for these cameras out there nowadays, never the same steps for each one.

That's why I do suggest getting in contact so our engineers can chat with you first to really dig into a workflow.

Not just trying to make a sale, but actually interested in spending some time to really investigate the ideal workflows for CCU/Camera communication so we can make any adjustments where need be.

Hi Andrew,

Modified the protocol? I know that Sony flips between odd and even parity settings in the middle of the command. However, there is an easy way around that: just also send the parity bit itself. Don't check the partity, just send the bit. The camere will then receive what it expects. As far as I know for the rest it's just standard 38400 baud RS-422 or RS-232.

Any updates on this matter? I'm regularly using a PDW700 as well (and a HDCP1) and would really want to start using our Beam more frequent. Without the RCP telemetry part, we still rather use the IDX CW-5HD due to the latency. Vislink started to fully support the PDW700 for it's L1500, even with tally, without any box-in-the-middle for quite many years now.

Regards,

David

I would love to see more integration of additional links. I don't see why technically it would not be possible to use the same link to have also:

- serial communication (this is low rate)
- tally (very low rate)
- intercom (also relatively low rate compared to the video data or the existing uncompressed audio data)
- reference (requires a timing offset (to incoming ref signal) to be transmitted in the radio package)
- and why not even a half-res return feed or full res with compression

Then finally there is an all in one solution. Now you need a separate device for each... Any device that would offer a proper product with more links integrated will have fantastic sales.

Did anyone maybe already find a device that has some link integration? (apart from the Beam)
