Bo Hallen
Hey everyone, Last week I posted about how I may have damaged my gimbal due to the overloaded stress of the Dragon, Zeiss 35mm cp2 lens, Paralynx Arrow, Red Brick, and Redrock Micro follow focus on my Zephyr. After telescoping the hell out of my sled I was able to achieve balance, (static anyways). NOw I am booked for pickups for an indie feature this Saturday and we are supposed to shoot on the Dragon again. Is there anything I can do to make the camera safe for flying on my Zephyr?? Would it help with the stress of a heavier payload to add more weight to the bottom of the sled? Or just take off as much weight as necessary?? ( rods, battery, mattebox, etc)
Premium Members Brian Freesh Posted October 13, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 13, 2015 The dragon is definitely not your problem, it's whatever else you have on there. My Epic/Dragon builds are never over 25 lbs. You're probably just built up with items you don't need. Make sure you have a clip on matte box instead of a studio, so that you can take the base plates off the bottom. Or if your matte box can go off mini rods, make sure you have mini rod support without having the baseplates on. Use aluminum or carbon fiber rods rather than steel if possible. And make sure you don't have a big heavy lens on there.... Power through the sled if you have to (you may need to buy a cable)
Bo Hallen
Brian, Thank you for your response. I wonder how would I mount Follow focus motor and transmitter without the baseplate?? Is there a way to use 15mm rods instead of 19mm rods with the RED baseplate?? I suppose we can lose the mattebox and filters (hopefully it is interiors or a cloudy day) and I do not believe we will be using the Zeiss cp2 lenses again. I do not know for sure but doesn't RED have a proprietary power supply?? I guess I'll have to look for a 3pin Lemo - Red power tap??? Media Blackout?? Bo Hallen
How is the RED camera powered?? Is it 3pin Lemo - 4pin xlr??
Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted October 15, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 15, 2015 The red epic uses a special Lemo plug. Check with media blackout and he can make you a custom power cable. I doubt the issue with your gimbal was due to overload. It looks like something got unscrewed. Yes, your gimbal can only hold up to a certain weight, but I flew some heavy red epic builds on the very sled you have right now. Good idea to use a clip on mattebo, I usually kept the battery on the camera to counterbalance the weight of the lens on the short epic body. I also like to avoid 19 mm baseplates and try to get the 15 mm one instead yes there is a special 15 mm baseplate. Otherwise you can rig a single rod on the top of the camera
