Headaches after operating

John Hatcher

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have some pinched nerve or muscle issue non steadi related that seems to be really irritated by operating lately. I can operate all day no problem, continuously stretch and so forth and I feel more or less great, and yet at night or early in the morning, I'll wake up with a tension type migraine on the right side of my head. I'm right handed too so this fits the migraine pattern. I've gotten an MRI on my right shoulder and it's normal as can be.

I can't seem to figure out what in particular is causing this though. Wondered if anyone else out there has ever had something like that happen...

Thanks ahead of time!

I don't have migraines but I do have a lot of allergies and see an allergist in LA. She's always asking me if I have migraines and I don't but she insists they are related to allergic reactions. That's all I know but maybe there's some new allergen in your world.

I'm checking it out now Chris! Thank you!!! It's definitely not allergies. It's something to do with scalene/sternocleidomastoid/traps that's involved I'm thinking.

Let me know how you get along. I hate to sound like an evangelist, but it helped my posture a lot, and informed me in the process of designing the Exovest. An ex-gf had her life-long migrane headaches cured permanently. Oh shit, I sound like an evangelist.

Good luck!

I'll definitely try Rev Chris! :) I know Janice, I've been testing things lately and after any type bench presses, the next day the base of my skull feels like a fireant mound of activity. There is definitely something being annoyed in both instances. I will say I've been to a orthopedist, neurologist, chiro and massage therapist and none of the Pezo wave/Tesla coil/ultrasound/TENS therapy has provided lasting solutions. Very frustrating to say the least! I'm looking into pillow culprits now too as I don't get that headache during operating, but only the night after whilst sleeping...

Ok, onward and upward with the Alexander Technique!

Hey John,

First you need to find a teacher you like. Some of them can be a bit wu. If they say they combine it with other 'alternative’ therapies, I'd avoid them. AT is well documented in the British Medical Journal and the Lancet as an effective therapy, and teachers train full time for 3-4 years to get qualified, so good ones stick to the pure technique.

I'd advise getting a couple of lessons to see if you click with the teacher, and if you do, go for a longer series. Some say 10 lessons is enough, but I've had a lot more. I learn something useful about my body every time, and I'm in a lot better shape than I would be oherwise.

I lmost admire AT because of what it isn't. It's not a therapy like chiropractic or massage, where you have to keep going back for the same treatment. It's a progressive education about your body; and it's not a series of exercises you have to repeat every day, you simply roll what you have learned into whatever it is you do every day.

Having said all that, it's a subtle process, and you may find it too slow for your tastes. I can only hope you get to like it as much as I do!

All the best,

Chris

Hi John,

It might be that you neck muscles/upper back tense up and take some strain when operating. This happens sometimes if your core muscles are struggling and/or due to posture. I also find sometimes that wearing headsets for a long period of time can irritate nerves and muscles either side that can obviously lead to headache. But for me I always try to make sure my posture is correct and I am using my core when lifting and operating to take most of the weight and strain. It is easy to tense up in the neck and shoulders. Just my 2 cents...

I had migraines for over 12 years, I went to many doctors. Each gave me some new meds but nothing worked. I was waking up in the middle of the night with pain for years. Now I'm free of that crap. Why? I stopped drinking anything that contains caffeine.

No coffee, no tea, no soda etc. The first 4 months was hell but after 4th month I started feeling amazing. No pain, I could sleep through the night and I could work.

You have to drink a lot of water and avoid caffeine at all cost.

If you have question, let me know. Good luck!!!
