Tony Gutierrez Posted January 9, 2016 Report Share Posted January 9, 2016 Hi, I am not a Steadicam operator but I've been a focus puller for over 20 yrs. I have a CDM-100 motor. It's one of my three motors with my MagNum focus system. So far, I have had no problems. It's EXTREMELY small and lightweight. It seems like it's probably just a off the shelf Faulhaber or Maxon motor with a built in encoder, but without any sort of gear reduction. And then put in a CNC-ed can. So fast probably, but without much torque? Maybe the state of the newest motors from those vendors allows for a design that was previously passed over? With a CDM-100 motor. It was initially setup with the CDM on the iris on the demo camera, but I swapped everything out to try to motor on focus. Lens was new Canon. Well. It's not going to knock anybody's socks off for speed or torque. It wasn't fast, and it wasn't powerful. It is light, small, and cheap though. I went to Keslow yesterday and tested the CDM-100 motor on a Angenieux 24-290 on an MDR 2 and MDR 3 as well as the MagNum. The motor is just as fast as a Preston motor on the focus ring on that lens. And I'll also ad that the motor was MUCH faster on the MagNum than on the preston with either the MDR 2 or 3. I also compared it to a Betz and a Heden motor and it had the same responsiveness and speed. I will say that for some reason, the motor seemed to chatter a bit on the MDR. I'm in contact with Chrosziel right now to try and figure out why. So far, I've found nothing else wrong with this motor. Like I said in the post, it was a full Magnum system. Full demo system with a Heden 28, a Betz motor, and the CDM. The CDM was much slower than either the Heden or Betz. That's not to say it wouldn't get the job done, for 90% of jobs. The Canon is not a hard lens to turn, but it does have probably more drag than a 24-290 on focus. I tested it yesterday on a 24-290 and it was incredibly fast. Just as fast as both the Betz and the Heden. I shot some video of it too. I'd love to see this. And not because I want to win any argument...it was my hope that the CDM would be fast at the expense of torque. Like I said before, I think the motor has a use case and I'd love to see it succeed. I can't tell you if it was the small or larger gear that was on it. Can you post a Youtube link? Just to see how fast it goes. I have a job in a few days. I'm hoping to put the motor through it's paces on a real shoot for a day and see how it goes. I used in on the commercial and had no problems but it wasn't exactly a very strenuous work out, if you know what I mean. I expect this next job to be a bit more involved. I feel it's comparable.
