steadicam on skies?

hi,

 

i am wondering if it would be possible to use a big rig on skies. maybe someone did that already?

 

a movie called "extreme ops" which was shot in my small village (some scenes) and on my housemountain (the zugspitze) shows a steadicam op flying some dummy thing i think. i added some pictures, the sled changes from a 3a to a i think ultra between the scenes, but the film isnt a continuity wonder at all, so thats the slightest problem.

i am quite a good skier and snowboarder and worked as instructor sometimes but i would not consider skiing with a fullrig. i think the rig would kill one if he falls...

 

the real op. on the film was christian duguay.

 

btw. do not buy that film, it is not worth the money and time ;)

Robert, i've oftern wandered the same thing...

I know Garrett has mentioned that skies arn't the best operating platform, but it does tweak teh interest doesn't it?

I've been tempted to give it a go sometime with a handheld rig, JR or something...

 

Those pictures are crazy.. are they actually shots form in the movie? That doens't look like a dummy rig at all, it apears to be a fulled decked out Steadicam Master - unless it's just an empty camera, batery and monitor casing.. but i somehow doubt it.

I ran an IMDB search and the operators name for the movie from there is: Christian Duguay

 

Anyone know any more abotu this?

I've done a lot of shooting off roller blades with a big camera and always get ?Have you tried the Steadicam with those?? I haven?t been keen to risk it. Has anyone? Does it work? Is the look worth it?

Though I think it "might" be possible, I think that the nature of steadicam is agains anything on a wet or gliding surface.

 

That´s why nobody is happy with wet floors, no matter how much profile you have on your shoes.

 

The posture of the body and forces on feet and legs are very similar to wind-surfing, which basically means that your feet are slipping forward under you, if you have a smooth surface.

 

In order to keep that under control, meaning the ability to stand still or brake on ice or snow, it would mean that you have to keep the rig very close to you, probably touching your body, or you have to balance by sticking out your butt and with a curved back, both of those postures are not very advisible.

 

This can only be done, in my opinion, with very lightweight rigs where the rig-bodymass ratio is very low, certainly not with a full size rig.

 

Then again, there are always people who manage anything against all theories.........

I added skies to my Rickjaw and it shure works great, its the best tool for snow, its like riding on a Quad, but in the sniw and very, very fast!!!. You need to have a great skier pushing the sled and also have safety straps from skier to sled, because if the skier goes down, you are going downhill on your own. This was my worst fear but nothing happened.
