Mike Klein
I have been getting a moderate amount of vibration in my shots when I start moving faster than a brisk walking speed. I have been checking out all the components of the rig and when I shake the sled, by itself, I can hear my center post cable moving around inside the post. It moves around when it is both fully extended and compacted. I have a Clipper 2 sled and I was wondering if there was a way I could fix it without sending it to Tiffen? I have access to the center cable from the base of the sled. I would need to completely take apart the top stage to detach the top stage cabling (I think?). I'm wondering if there is a manageable fix? I'm not even sure that the vibration is being caused by the center post cable. I doubt that it would cause a lot of vibration but I am trying to make the sled as solid as possible. Thanks all, happy new year!
Moderators Janice Arthur Posted January 2, 2016 Moderators Report Share Posted January 2, 2016 Mike; I'm not sure cable is issue or how to fix the "movement" you hear. Just because you hear the cable when you shake the rig doesn't mean thats the source of the vibration, as you said. Since you are trouble shooting, a long ago time with a film camera and a lesser top stage; I put camera on the rig balanced it all up and put a big synch strap around camera and top stage and tightened it down a bunch but not crazy tight (don't break anything by tightening it too much). I did find it make for a more solid rig. It was not practical for shooting applications but it was a good point for thinking about where gaps might exist. You might even be able to try a similar test on the bottom and/or monitor arm. My suspicion is that it's your monitor arm because that's the biggest lever and would move most when you move fast. Good luck. Janice
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted January 2, 2016 Moderators Report Share Posted January 2, 2016 Seriously doubt it's the cable. My modified PRO with XCS post will do the same thing but no vibration results. Most likely the top state or the monitor/monitor arm. Also make sure it's not the batteries. Mike Klein
Thank you for the responses, Janice and Alec. I think you are right about the cable not being the source of the vibration. My monitor mount definitely leaves much to be desired and I can definitely see it being the source of the vibration. The top stage seems very solid but I won't rule it out either. Thinking about upgrading to something like this for a monitor mount: http://cam-jam.de/qma.html In any case I just contacted Chris Konash from NYC Panavision and he's going to tidy up my center cabling. Thanks again guys!
