My first wireless video sytem

Recommended Posts

Iam starting to build my rig ... hello journey !!! I own the zephyr and want to start by wireless video . However i just dont have the budget yet to go with the 3k 8k Sdi kits so i got start from the ground up

im thinking going with the older SD transvideo rx tx with a 6.5 monitor . The problem is most cameras for the jobs in my area are going blackmagic red with sdi out so i will need a sdi to sd converter . Well at least thadt the set up im thinking doing .

Is this a common thing amoung newbies ? What was your first video kit ? What was your first wireless ff ?

Hi there, If you get a Decimator 2, you'd be all set to convert the HD/SDI signal to composite, still have a loop thru for your HD/SDI sled monitor and use the large array of SD transmitters still out there. I've sold several transvideo Titan SD systems, still have a few left.

My first kit was a Paralinx Arrow HDMI transmitter, they are cheap and you can connect to the HDMI out on red cameras.

Cheaper not is the Nyrius Pro: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0092T3E3A Also HDMI

I would stay away from SD since it might deter some clients (they don't want to watch the image from their 6K camera in glorious SD. The AC will be pissed as well.

I now have upgraded to a Teradek Bolt 300 since SDI is the way to go but still have my HDMI as a backup.

Wireless Follow focus, get a used Bartech, I have an analog one, this this is built like a Panzer tank, will never break. Yea it's heavy and big but it will. never. break. (apart form motor maintenance now and then)

I've heard decent things about Ghost Eye from Cinegear. I would stay away from their follow focus but their wireless video system seems to receive a decent rep.

Bolt series just get too hot for me during use. Not ideal for my uses.

Not sure exactly how cheap you need to go, but the $1300 Connex Mini from Amimon has very good range. It's an HDMI based system but later generation boards than the original Paralinx/Nyrius units and much better performing.

Be aware both Connex and Connex Mini both use 4 pin JTSE power connector that is incredibly fragile. It's designed for systems that are to be built and stay put, such as air drones. I've used it on a Movi job and we went through at least 3 power cable on a 5 day job because they kept on breaking while multiple loading & unloading from the system.

There is no question that the connector is fragile, it's a weak point. I'm sure that if I were moving my transmitter around I'd tape or bongo tie the cable to the body of the transmitter to eliminate pulling on the connector, and/or protect the whole thing with a clamp of some sort.
