Were you ever in a situation where you said "No" ?

Lol, fun topic! I'm kind of a bad example as I don't recall ever saying no. I have said that I wouldn't do it the way they wanted but I've always been able to figure out a better or safer way to do it. I've done lots of steadicam on rollerblades, horses, step offs of forklifts, backs of fire trucks, steadicam on a bamboo raft going down a river, shooting 10' alligators, through burning buildings (even melted the matte box while on the rig), I can't even list them all. That being said, I've never done anything I thought wasn't safe (or at least reasonably safe).

I was once shooting in a boxing ring that had so many 9 lights it was about 120 degrees. I was drinking lots of water and paying attention to my body, shooting the boxer and the ring girls. They then brought a young kid (5 or 6) into the ring. I shot him for literally 45 seconds then cut. The director wanted to go again and I just said it was too hot in the ring for a kid that young and got out. Director didn't understand so I told him to go stand in the ring. About 20 seconds later he climbed out and said he understood, agreed and thanked me for not roasting the kid.

One more funny one regarding speaking inappropriately on set. I was doing a movie a million years ago. We were shooting a famous (perhaps one of the most famous) supermodels in the world at the time. It was her first acting gig and her first day on set. Director says, out loud, in front of the whole crew and the supermodel, "million dollar piece of pussy and she can't even act". Talk about could hear a pin drop. To her credit, she just said, "okay, I'll try harder" and continued. Obviously the director had some issues. Same movie the DP and the B operator actually had to pick the director up and carry him off set because one of the actors was knocking set dressing over as he ran to try and kill him. Knowing this particular hot headed A lister, I think he was serious and might actually have killed the director on set if he had the chance.

Ah, memories :D

I got a call from someone associated with Humvee, and they had some strange projection set up which required the Humvee to be extremely close to me on the back of the camera car.

The course was some extreme all-terrain course which meant slipping, falling movements; gunning one or both vehicles over obstacles had just too many unknowns with me in the open on the back of a camera vehicle it seemed crazy.

I said no and the person who called understood the dangers too as we talked it through. The other part was I didn't want to promise I could get all the footage they wanted, the way they wanted it. I was not sure Steadicam was the best mount to use get what they wanted with this strange projection set up that needed extremely close moving vehicle footage.

Glad I said no.
