I have on of those (the Alexa Mini variety). Not selling. But just learned from Transvideo support that you can not

color calibrate that monitor. At all.

Which seems a bit surreal.

Just want you to be aware of that when you buy.

Might be because it is a mobile phone display.

Not sure where you get that info? In any case it's a OLED display, 800 lines @ 5". Has very nice blacks and colour reproduction. You can adjust Contrast, Brightness and Saturation, as on most monitors.

I don't know about most monitors. But every single monitor that I have owned - and there were a few - I could adjust the color balance.

And not just brightness, contrast and saturation, which do nothing to get an accurate color reproduction.

Or in other words: My HD5 is magenta as hell. Makes people look like Oompa Loompas. And all Transvideo support

has to say is 'well too bad, this monitor cannot be calibrated'.

Sorry Williams. Did not mean to hijack your thread. But it simply never occurred to me that in 2016 one of the world market leaders

in high end monitors would bring out a quite expensive monitor that cannot be color calibrated. Otherwise I would not have bought it.

Sounds like something is wrong with yours.

I got one early on (pre the Arri kind), and it didn't have any picture adjust. I talked to Transvideo in France and they released a firmware update that added Colour/Contrast/Chroma adjust. I thought that the picture still had a tint bias (from memory slightly green, it was very minor). Mentioned this and I was sent a one-off firmware that corrected this, which was then added to the next official firmware release.

I also talked to them about the lack of peaking, again, they added this to the next firmware update. Granted its not that great, but given that it was never an intended feature for the monitor I thought that the fact they tried and came up with something was great.

I have managed to match the monitor using the included controls very closely to the Alexa EVF, and had it onboard as a reference for the DOP on a 2 month feature, he thought it was the best representation of the camera he had seen with an onboard monitor.

On another note, I was on a job today where we had a new (insert widely used brand name here) onboard monitor, that was specced as full HD, 7". It was up alongside another (won't mention the brand name) monitor that was specced at quarter HD resolution (around 450 lines). I couldn't believe how average, well.... everything about the picture looked on the new full HD monitor - this is comparing it to a monitor of the same size that is quarter the resolution. Especially how soft the full HD image was. And don't get me started on the user interface.... Just goes to show that image processing and software is just as important as the number of pixels.

interesting.

good to hear a couple of other opinions. and glad that the HD5 seems to be working because I really

want it to work. maybe I just have a dud.

I talked to Transvideo support and let's say they were not exactly rushing to solve the issue. Which surprised me considering their stellar

reputation.

I have since sent in the monitor to Abel Cine. Let's see what they say.

I still think it is strange that you would bring out a quite pricey little monitor in 2016 that that has zero color adjusting capabilities.

But that is just me :-)

In terms of tint I let the picture speak for itself. The left monitor is a color calibrated SmallHD pro - right is the HD5.
