John Stevens Posted August 2, 2016 Report Share Posted August 2, 2016 I've got an extremely simple question hopefully someone here can answer. I create video virtual tours of high end real estate and I have used the Glidecam in the past coupled with a DSLR camera. I can't figure out how to focus the camera now that it's mounted in the DJI Ronin-MX. With the Glidecam I just switched the camera to auto focus, got my focus point, then switched to manual focus for that clip. When the camera is mounted in the DJI Ronin, you need the stand to sit the thing down, and you have to turn off the gimbal just to press buttons on the camera, so I see no way to switch between MF and AF for each clip. When I leave the camera in AF all the time it hunts for focus at the worst possible time so that's not an option. I'm a one man show so I don't have anyone who can follow focus for me. Gustav Andersson Posted August 7, 2016 Report Share Posted August 7, 2016 DJI have a system too. Made to take power from p-tap on the Ronin (not sure if all Ronins have a p-tap though). I don't think they have a thumbwheel system but worth checking out. Remember that if you use lenses without teeth, you need a teeth strap thing on the lens for it to work. If the DJI focus and Redrock micro systems are too expensive, maybe check out Lenzhound by motion dogs. The motor is probably quite loud for a follow focus and I'm sure it has other issues as well. But it might be a good starting point if noise is not gonna be a problem (not picking up audio close to the mic in quite room with fast focus rack). Gustav Andersson Posted August 7, 2016 Report Share Posted August 7, 2016 Someone mentioned Redrock micro before but that post is now gone. The good thing about the Redrock system is the thumbwheel. Single operator.. have a manual lens, set the focus shoot, the ronin does not need switching off to adjust the focus, you just can not do it mid take as grabbing the focus wheel will upset your shot Two operators. DJI remote focus seems to be a good value system for pulling focus on small DSLR lenses, you might even be able to rig it on to your rig handlebars somehow or ideally get someone to pull for you.
