Brenton Lee
Hi there. I haven't been to LA since 2003 and even then it was only for one day so I'm wondering if anyones got any advice on things to do and see? I'll be there with no plans from 3rd till 8th of April, then 9th till the 15th doing the Steadicam Workshop in Long Beach. I'd love to check out anything film-related, etc and avoid the usual tourist traps (hence asking you guys and not google). This might tank, but any help is appreciated. Cheers Brenton. Premium Members Jake Iesu Posted February 9, 2017 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 9, 2017 Go hiking up to the observatory. [emoji1360] and avoid the traffic! I always like to take a drive to the outskirts when I'm on that side of the planet (santa Barbara or sequoia NP) or check out some live comedy if your hell bent on sticking inside the city. Best of luck at the workshop.
Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted February 10, 2017 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 10, 2017 Venice Boardwalk, Abbot Kinney blvd, Santa Monica 3rd st Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier. Drive out to Malibu and Zuma Beach or County Line. Getty Museum. LACMA Museum. Make reservations 1st day of the month for the Broad Museum downtown and hit the Grand Central market for lunch and while you are down there check out the Bradberry Building used in Bladerunner (it's down the street from the market). Also Hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains above Hollywood or Will Rodgers Park. There are music and comedy clubs on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood. Premium Members William Demeritt Posted February 10, 2017 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 10, 2017 If Ron Baldwin shows up in a convertible with a bottle of bourbon and tells you he's taking you to a place called Jumbo's, just get in and don't ask questions.
Keith Wood
If you like Filipino food, it's worth the trip to go to Salo-Salo Grill (check them online). If you've never had Filipino food, it's DEFINITELY worth the trip (I suggest the chicken adobo, rice and lumpia). A good place for lunch and camera work (I'm going to assume that bring your rig) is the In-N-Out Burger at the east end of the runways at LAX, if the planes are coming in from the east. Actually, you want to be in the little grass area next to the In-N-Out, because you haven't lived until you've had a 747 fly over you so low that you could read the stencils on the bottom of the plane. A good place for practice catching stuff coming overhead. Tour the Jet Propulsion Laboratory: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/events/tours/views/ -- you might want to check with them about bringing your rig. WhollyOdd -- er, I mean Hollywood -- Blvd. The Mormon Temple visitor center. Mulholland Drive overlooking LA. Mullholland at Edwards Corner (https://www.wired.com/2014/02/mulholland-the-snake/), usually good for a few motorcycle crashes on any warm Saturday, You want to STAY UP ON THE HILL. Don't ask how I know this. The air museum at Chino Airport. There are some other good museums. Some don't allow photography. Most of SoCal is "film related," so pick a couple of your favorite films or TV series, figure out where their locations were, and go look at those places today (for instance, you wouldn't recognize Rampart Station today as being related to "ADAM-12" but Station 127 out in Carson still looks like when they shot "Emergency!" there). Brenton Lee
So many notes to take here. Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to check out as many of these things as I can. I'm also going to drop in at Panavision and see if I can have a look around.
