What is the boot-up time of the monitor? When you cut power to the monitor and restore power, do you have to push the power button to turn it back on (702 behaviour) or does it turn on by itself? Seems like the 'soft-toggle' behaviour is customary nowadays.

It does not turn back on once there is a power loss and power is then restored. Like the 702, you'll need to press the power button again to turn it back on.

The boot-up time is quick, very similar to the 702.

I have the 702 and t has a very noticeable delay, a few frames at least, which makes it not great for focus pullers, and not ideal to operate from. I initially bought the 702 as a backup steadicam monitor, but having seen the delay I would not use it on steadicam. Can anyone comment on the lag or delay ( or lack of) on the 703?

I've been using the 703 with the yoke for the past week and I'm happy with it. I have not noticed any delay other then the one that always comes out of the RED Dragon to any monitor other then the touch screen.

It's a nice image we are going to run into the problem of DP's and Directors looking over are shoulder at it.

The screen is reflective I'm tempted to put an iPad anti glare screen protector on it but I have not yet. I have been outside in sun and overcast this past week in the tri-state area and out of the box it has been good enough for me to see in all situations.

I wish all monitors were water resistant because I hate rain covers. But this one is not.

There is not a way to turn off the image flip so when going to low mode the quick and dirty way requires the push of a few buttons. I have spoke to Small HD and they are looking into a fix for it.

All and all I'm happy with the monitor. I'm torn between buying the 503 to mount to the 15mm rods on the camera for low mode shots or buying a 2nd 703 so my back up monitor is exactly the same. I still have my cinetronic gen2 and the Steadicam/transvideo 8" high bright backing me up right now.

James,

I have received the yoke and put it all together. Works great. For giggles, I added the anti-reflective coating yesterday and it's very clear. Not sure how much it cuts reflections but it installs easily and protects the screen. I'm currently on a bit of a break from work so I haven't really used it yet in the real world.

Philip, according to your opinion, what is the best monitor between transvideo 8" and SmallHD 703?

Tough to say I've only had the 703 for a week, I've had a transvideo for years. I need to have the 703

Out in the field longer to say.

The price points are very different. Both totally do the job.

The built in level on the transvideo is nice. I have he XCS digital level so I do not need a level built into the monitor.

I like the 703 for the low light work I've been doing at night. I find both the transvideo and cinetronic are great during the day but are hard to see at night, the way people are lighting these digital days.

for night work in the Transvideo go to image profile and select Linear vs 709 and you can look beautifully into the shadows. Also make sure to upgrade the software, this enables you to still adjust brightness and contrast in linear mode,I use it for all ext work, day and night.

I use the 702 as a camera monitor and mine has zero delay.

I'm beginning to suspect this could be because i primarily use the monitor in 25p (Australia being a PAL/50hz territory we mostly shoot in 25p).

I'll have to do some tests but the delay is real for me, not sure what we're doing wrong. Interestingly it's not an issue with my 502 ? any tips?

Contact SmallHD. Update/Reload the software? I've reloaded it to fix an issue with the toggle.

Just a note on the 703's pass-through:

It uses 28 AWG wire, so don't plug anything into it that pulls more than about 1.4A. The two Lemo connectors are just wired together, so either one can be used as the input or output. their decision to wire it that way means that the battery input does not get passed through to the output Lemo. I'll be offering a mod that corrects this for anyone who needs the battery to power the output.
