I've done is handheld before and also with an Easyrig, I'm just wondering if anyone has tried to do Steadicam with a pair of Skates on? We shot "Maurice Richard" feature film about the hockey legend and Francois did some amazing stuff on skates with the 235... Premium Members JobScholtze Posted April 8, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 2 Weeks ago i did the final of Dancing on Ice. Not on skates but i used golf shoes. With steel pins. It worked just fine and was able to do the 3 minuts openings shot live on ice. The gravity center of your body changes...and you get fall.... :angry: I did Ice Princess for disney and we used a small metal platform 3'x3' that i stood on with my old 3a and was pushed by two strong skaters. We also built an electric crane base with studded tires it held a gf-6 crane with a stabilized head crane op, driver and myself. Premium Members Charles Papert Posted April 19, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 19, 2007 High speed work is best done with a rig that wavebuddy (real name please buddy!) describes; walking speed is done with golf shoes as Job describes or strap-on metal cleat dealies like the Stabilicers (I had a thread on this a year or two ago here)--the advantage of which is that you get to use them on your own shoes/sneakers/boots etc, which will likely give you better support than dedicated golf shoes. David Erlichman Posted April 19, 2007 Report Share Posted April 19, 2007 We did the opening sequence for the NHL's All Star Game when it was in Toronto a couple of years ago and Keith Murphy had a blast chasing pucks & players all over a frozen pond. You'll have to ask him how he felt about it, but he does come from a hockey playing background and seemed comfortable with the rig and skates. Premium Members Mark Karavite Posted April 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 25, 2007 As a guy who has played hockey since 4 years old, I think wearing skates while operating Steadicam is a dangerous proposition. I am as comfortable on skates as anybody, and I have turned down the request several times. For slow moving shots on ice, the proper footwear can make it safe and successful. For quick shots, I have operated handheld with a small camera body. Once up to speed on the skates, I go into a glide mode. The shots are very smooth, and I an "dolly" left or right by simply turning on skates. Imagine crashing on skates in the rig! That is scary. Years back I did a Red Wings promo spot with The Captain, Steve Yzerman. They wanted to track in behind Steve going full speed towards the goalie. Handheld holding the camera by the handle, I would do a full lap to gain speed. I came around the opposite goal with Yzerman on my tail. I would start the glide around the first blue line, & by the red line, Yzerman was in position in front of me. Being a hockey player & huge Red Wing fan, it was about the funnest shoot ever. I was happy to leave the rig at home. I asked Steve if I should slow down a bit so he could catch up to me :) Luckily, The Captain had a sense of humor, he must have been going less than 1/2 speed. Regarding footwear for ice work, Neos has some interesting over boots. Check them out on line. I have ordered a pair of normal over boots (not the ice grabbers) for cold weather work. You can wear normal trail runners, and the over boots are lightweight, and super warm. Just pop them off for the shot, then pop them back on to stay warm. Very nice. I am using Golf Shoes for grip with steel pins. Works great, but makes a lot of noice, lol. But in the show with loud music and fireworks you dont hear a thing. Btw, this was not the reharsel yet. And not the show yet.
