Its so Heavy that I didn't even have them remove the optics with the conversion kit as it didn't make it much lighter and it would have taken to long. Also If the shot is a long walk and talk with a chance for many takes such as "it plays in one" then I wouldn't do the production any favor. It's no problem for a master arm (that's what I own), but it's no picnic either. I think the conversion kit takes about 6-8 pounds off the camera. I was flying a Pana G2 conv kit with primos when my 3A arm blew up (suprise). I did get to weigh it -- 33 lbs no lens. That's with Jerry Hill's bracket, 1 preston motor, 400' film, clip on mb, 2 camera plates and the dovetail adaptor. Add a primo and you're up to 39/40lbs...a bit heavy in my humble opinion for one to do his best work, or to remain virticle in 20 yrs. Brett Manyluk Posted February 24, 2004 Report Share Posted February 24, 2004 I flew a panastar and baseplate with a 1000 foot mag and all the optics on yesterday. That was a little taxing. But it balanced on the sled with 2 pro pacs on the bottom and a third taped on for ballast. I flew it with my Baer-Bel arm and it had plenty of strength for it with extra left over. Its really tough to turn down a job but its even harder to look back and realize that maybe you could have done better. You have to watch for yourself. No one really understands the problems we have walking onto a set.We have to communicate our needs to get the best shot. We try not to be too "needy" but everyone is there to make magic happen on film. To really put our best foot forward is to give ourselves a fighting chance. Flying a big heavy motor around all day with a smile on your face is tough! To go into low-mode requires two plates to off-set the weight. Nothing is easy. I balked at first but was told it would only be two shots off a golf cart. I got to work early to prep the beast then went to have a cup of tea to wait around for my shots to happen. I was standing there looking interested when Bob said lets do the next shot on Steadicam. Off the technocrane.... 0-60 in one second. My shot was chasing Barry Sanders, NFL rushing leader, up 165 stairs in low mode.Bob Geraldi yelling faster, faster! Ouch!!! I did it 5 times telling myself never to fly a G-2 again. And I haven't. I wouldn't want to fly that kind of setup all the time, but I'm as comfortable with a BL4 and stairs as a person could be (I suppose). Of course Arricams on every show would be great... I have flown the GII a couple of times... not a pretty sight. It makes for a very solid and smooth frame, but if they are asking you to fly it for 3 to 4 minutes takes it's getting quickly VERY heavy. I have to opt for the Conversion Kit and the lightweight mags, why carry more then you have to. Usually the Companies that hire you and use that camera don't have any money and don't care much for you either, if you are not up to that weight, they will quickly loose patients, "What to you mean you have to dock between takes?", "Can you quickly frame up... let's do a quick rehearsal... okay another one... and let's go to picture right away... and 2nd, 3rd take right away to keep the energy up... why is the frame getting wobbly????" And ALWAYS that quick shot or two will turn into a tour the force, "The steadi is already up, it takes to long to change over, the sun is setting... let's grab a couple of shots... right away... hours later you can dock... .... you get the picture? Caution: Low Mode!!! The real pain starts when they ask you to go Lowmode. The GII was never really designed to get inverted. Most of the time they don't have the Lowmode conversion, I saw the XL top throught adapter used, man that was scary and wobbly... If the Viewfinder is still in place it will not work anyways as it will hit the D-Box/Camera Stage. Caution when you turn the Camera body upsite down... The GII has a Led covered body (for sound dampening) with the Throught glued to the body which will not hold a full 400 foot load when turned around... I caught the broken off mag in mid air once when I was balancing... It also does not work to say to the Producer I told you so... while holding the rig in one hand and the mag in the other while the film is still rolling through the Camera... would make for a great picture... (Nobody took one... bummer...) Do it once, to know for the next time, why to say NO WAY in hell... What I tell to everybody that calls and asks, I tell them: "You will not be able to do your best work... periode.) And the newest: The people that hire you will most likely see your worst work, because rarely the editor uses YOUR best take in the final cut that people will see, so make your worst shot/take look as darn good as possible. Every take counts... and refuse the usual: Let's shoot the rehearsal crap. I have flown GII's, Panastars, BL-4's, 535's... My stuff from the LWII or a Moviecam looked way better over the entire day... and I felt way better at the end of the day and the pay check was way bigger as well...
