Regaurdless, Birdboy's response was very rude. I feel if people are intentionally disrespectful, then their user privileges should be taken away. This forum is supposed to help all of us whether we are veterans or newbies and this jerk is just instigating. I have such a hard time believing that a professional DP has such poor etiquette.

Hence my response to him. now he's whining away on the Steadiforums about how mean we are, how stuckup we are and how we measure ourselves by the gear we fly.

Honestly do you think I would be working on TV series' if I had a Basson?

I would like to respectfully remind anyone who may have forgotten (or never knew) that this forum was created as an alternative to the old AOL folders so non-AOL customers and the international community could partake. The purpose of both folders was to provide a forum for PROFESSIONAL Steadicam Operators to discuss the issues we face day in and day out on professional sets using professional gear. Novices were always embraced, but in turn they treaded lightly and respected the professional environment put forth by the members at large. In a nutshell, this forum was never designed to be a mass market forum, serving anyone and everyone. There are many forums out there for the casual enthusiast and homebuilt guys. We are not judging anyone; a mere matter of practicality. Surely one does not chat about miniature remote controlled Porches in the same place they discuss the actual cars?

Thank you.

Hi all! Been browsing the forums for a while now, learning all I can, but I wanted to chime in on this one. I have never owned or operated a steadicam before, but I plan on entering the profession after college.

I have researched many different steadicam brands, and the one that makes the most sense, for me anyways, is the Basson. When I purchase a rig in the near future, I plan on buying one of their setups. Probably the 'black bee', with some of the accessories. After a couple modifications I think it will work plenty well for my beginning needs.

I can't afford a Steadicam brand rig at this point, and Basson's price fits my budget just right. However, in the future after getting the feel for operating, and earning the capital, I will buy a 'real' rig.

Thats where I'm at.

Good luck to everyone!

Hi

I hope this isn't a wind up?

From a Basson user.

Could you not save some extra cash and get a Glidecam V25 or a used EFP you will be glad of the extra wait in the long run! You can pick up a used EFP from $6000 if you look round for a "well used" rig! With the benifit of hindsight I would probably have gone this route. But I have to Work with what I've got now.

Not that some of us homebuilt guys aren't either professionals, or working to be professionals, but really, yes, this is a forum for professional ops, not a newbie training camp or a place for people to whine about how a cheap rig is "just as good" and that they don't see any differences. This is one of the few places remaining where professional ops come together, and semi-pro ops watch on from the sidelines and soak up everything that they can. Turning this into just another "Hey my $15 Steadycam is better than your Flyer" board helps nobody.

Alright, I'm done now. Time to go back to reading and learning from all of you ops that I have so much to learn from.

P.S. Alec, Remember me? The highschooler at the workshop. Well, Hi again! :)

Tom,

Yes, I remember you very well; a polite & curious young lad that is here to learn. I applaud your efforts and encourage you strongly. I'm well aware that there are many home built guys that are aspiring operators and that is great too. Like you said, this is a place for professionals and I make no secret of the fact this is what I advocate for THIS particular forum (and for the record, I firmly believe that there should be forums for the hobbyist, homebuilt guys, etc. - just not here). Newbies are always welcome to come and explore our world here too; I just want to keep things on track. I know I'd much rather read an article on Larry McConkey's latest views on gyros than how to make a $15 stabilization device of your own. That's all I'm saying.

Cheers.

I totally agree. This is a forum for Pro's using professional gear. The newbies are welcome to come and read but please understand that they are for lack of a better term in "The Clubhouse" and should respect that.

Hi

I believe when Jason started the steadiforum he tried to contact Tim Tyler to suggest that. However he got no response. Steadiforum isn't meant to be a direct competitor to this forum more of a complimentary site with more crossover for low end / homebuilt rigs.

I know this forum has the newbies section but can still be scary for a noob posting on there for the first time. Imagine playing guitar and asking you favourite player a question, Not knowing if it's going to be a dumb question (not to you but to them) they have heard a million times before and they rip your head off for asking it.

I know sometimes the same question gets asked over and over I've seen it. But we tend not to be as harsh on the people for asking it, Just post the link to the previous thread or copy and paste. It isn't that hard! It takes me a second or two and if I don't like the question or a statement made by somebody I ignore it, Not rise to it.

I tend to look on this forum as a book to read from. Where pro ops like Alec, Charles, Eric, Larry and of course Garrett are constantly rewriting it and re-releasing a revised version very day. Hopefully one day I'll be able to fully join in in writing this book too, but for now I like to read.

If anybody from this forum would like to visit us at www.steadiforum.com feel free. Please come on over we love to learn, Just be gentle!

  • 12 years later...

just my two cents...

I tried to do a football mach with one bassoon... Just hated it.

I already refused 3 jobs with basson after that experience. Very hard to balance, the materials seams to being stolen from a construction warehouse. no time spent with details. It is just another league for who works with steadicam/gpi. I believe that some people can sort it out but for what I do it just don't work.

In my opinion... Avoid it!!!
