It's an EFP and was wondering if anyone can recommend someone in LA to fix it. Does Tiffen still deal with these things? The only question is if they have the parts or if they still can make them. I would give Tiffen a call and if they can't fix it I'm sure they can direct you to somebody. But also keep in mind that most parts of other rigs will fit or substitute for your EFP parts, you could use Model 3 and 3A parts as well as some of the ProVid and SK parts will/should fit as the design has not huggely changed. So you could find used parts on the market that will work... as a last resort. But first call Tiffen. 310-645-4568 If it's an emergancy I think the extension 13 will put you through to Frank Rush. (If anybody has newer or better numbers or ways to get into contact with Tiffen in a emergancy, like weekend and the like, please share them here and use a new Topic so that its easier to find...) James Livingston Posted January 5, 2004 Report Share Posted January 5, 2004 Hello Kenny, If you have an original EFP Gimbal the clamp is a removable ring. Last I checked (Which was over a year ago) Tiffen had a few of these in stock. To replace this part you will need to remove the gimbal. Which is best done by disconnecting the lower electronic connectors and disassembling the post at the post-locking clamp. It is not too difficult, just cumbersome. Hope this helps. This time, you're giving false hope. The simple fact is that the locking ring on an EFP Gimbal is an integral part of the gimbal/handle piece. They are one and the same, and the lock rests at the bottom of the handle. it does not reside within the gimbal ring, as is the case with the Model III and Model III-A Steadicam ® gimbals. He cannot swap and change parts. he just can't. What he CAN do, if Tiffen cannot replace that lower handle portion of the gimbal/handle, is to try replacing that gimbal with another one. It is a commong diameter, he could indeed pull off the EFP totally and replace with a III or III-A gimbal. . Many parts will fit some will not, If you don't try how will you know. There are many EFP Gimbals sitting in various garages, just waiting for a new incarnation. Yokes, Forks, Handles, bearings, Cups, etc. many things will fit many will not. He doesn't need a hole one just some parts that will fit. If you ask me dump the EFP (Gimbal) and go with almost any one out there that states a 1.5 inch post diameter... I wanted to add a picture of a rig that we put together at the Malibu Workshop back in 2000. GB is flying a Mini with a ProVid Gimbal topped with an SL Cine 35 and using the PRO arm with an arm adaptor... Darn... See here I can't include a picture... I'll try and post it somewhere else... I added a funny picture to the index page of the steadicam guild web site to amuse, in the meantime. http://www.steadicamguild.net This reminds me... Where do you guys/gals want to meet this month? I think Able Cine Tech in Burbank is planning another presentation for us NEXT month. (don't quote me on that though) How about a Tin Horn Flats Gathering in Burbank in a couple of weeks? I littel modification to it, and it became a dual perpose locking clamp / low mode docking ring. I still use this system for locking my post. They still have some parts for EFP's and the docking ring is indeed separate on the gimbal (on my model) Fitting it was easy - split the post, slip the ring over the connecting wire, onto the post and the gimbal. 10 mins and & $65 - result. Guess what; you can not search on EFP or efp, it doesn´t allow you to search 3-letter words. So maybe you tried and had the same result. Anyway, the EFP is a lightweight system, now replaced by several newer style rigs. The arm that goes with it is the same as film-version of that time (IIIa) but with lighter springs. Basically designed for 16 mm and video cameras but many operators had them converted to do everything. I think I heard Jerry Hill once saying he had a BL3 on it. I flew one just a few weeks ago (when my Master was temporarely down, emergency) it was rebuild with 2 Sony Li-ion bricks for 28 volts, marell monitor and flew a 435 easily.
