Mitch Gross Posted February 20, 2004 Report Share Posted February 20, 2004 For a backup transmitter, has anyone tried one of the incredibly inexpensive 2.4Ghz setups out of China? One that I saw at NAB last year I see is being sold by Markertek for only $339.95. For that ou get a 1w transmitter and a receiver, both of which run off 12v (comes with AC power supplies) and have audio & video RCA jacks. The transmitter is all of 2.25x1.75x1.25 inches in size (not including rubber duck antenna) and the setup has four channels in case you get interference. I know that 2.4Ghz can have issues with movement and lack of line of sight, but it's so powerful and as a backup how wrong can you go for $340? Anyone try one? They're not cheap at about $1700 - $2K new (and not microwave either), but they're pretty decent, rugged, lightweight and small. Any TV tuner can receive the image which is a huge benefit on many shows where different departments have their own HH TV's to watch the takes. It seems to be the industry standard here in LA. Premium Members Thomas English Posted February 20, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 20, 2004 yeah.... these 4channel 1w chinese transmitters i use one " on the moon only if british authorities are interested" the main problem with 2.4 is that when moving around u kinda fall out of phase with the bouncing radio waves. because the wavelengh is so short it goes in straight lines and "doesnt flex much". it can t turn corners very well. so u get drop out when moving, no matter how strong the signal is. this is very acceptable though. and i have used it round loads of corners and through walls. otherwise its wicked! i paid considerably less for mine though... probably all in 300 australian dollars! and i reckon its definately the same transmitter! (inc. tx, rx and ariels). from a weird company called allthings in australia http://www.allthings.com.au/Wireless/high%...ransmitter.html what ive done is bought a seperate 7db gain antenna for the reciever. which can be clamped to a redhead and put at some height. i have not yet tried it out with all different types of radio mikes... keep an eye on the sound boys... if they re panicking, its probably your fault. but ive had no problems with modulation going onto tapes (digibeta or dvcam) my wifi (wireless lan network) in my house on the moon, drops to about 30pcent signal strengh when i run it! basically it is a mess.. but it doesnt bleed that badly accross channels. i doubt the harmonics (multiplications of frequency) are too bad. it gets hot! needs a signal consantly when on or it will break.... one day it will break for no apparent reason in my van i have an other 12db antenna on the roof. this feeds the signal to my laptop running cctv motion detection software. so it only records when its transmitting and i can review practise or takes afterwards Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

When the 2nd ACs or the video playback person is standing around scratching their heads because they can't get a picture up on the monitor I whip out the hamd held unit and it reduces the panic/stress level for the moment and you keep rehersing or shooting. Premium Members Matias Mesa Posted February 21, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 21, 2004 Lawrence: I use the Coherent CVT 1400 wich is my main TX and I have a CVR 1500 as my main receiver, this is a diversity tunner wich uses three antenas, great system. I also have a 7.4 TFT monitor with a receiver from coherent as well, its called the CVR 200 is like a pack of cigarettes in size, I power both units, monitor and receiver with an Anton Bauer Gold mount and a Proformer (it will usually last 8hs). Its a light system and it keeps DP´s, directors out of my monitor but still close. Usually this tunners are better than the ones built into the cheap mini TV´s. Give it a try. Pickups all broadcast frequencies, UHF, VHF and microwave. The Canadian Version even picksup Cell phone transmissions(illegal in the U.S. but then so is the Modulus) This is the cheapest price I've seen. And GigaParts will ship for Free. I've seen them with a whip antenna as well. I'm gonna get one soon as I have both the Modulus and a Coherent microwave transmitter. Just have to sell a few parts to generate the cash. I have a Lcd monitor from Mk-V where I attach a seperate pag battery and the microwave reciever on the back, and hand it to the director......it works like a charm... ..he can even make his own framelines on screen.... Premium Members Charles Papert Posted February 21, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 21, 2004 On many shows the transmitted signal is also used by the sound mixer so he can work with his boom guy, and the AD's to help them run traffic. I can think of many occasions where productivity would go down if they were not able to receive a signal on their TV band receivers. I've sometimes thought about using a microwave link for the primary signal to the monitors, then piggybacking a TV band (Modulus etc) transmitter onto the Microwave receiver to repeat the signal to the rest of set. The nice thing is that you can then use a bigger antennae than we are able to accomodate on the sled which will hopefully make up for the double transmission issue. Anyone doing this?
