dalemccready Posted February 24, 2004 Report Share Posted February 24, 2004 HI All, Recently I had the pleasure of testing out the new HD Varicam from Panasonic (very impressive and not heavy!), and sitting on top was a very cool HD 9" LCD monitor. Similar to the UltraBrite but with SDI options on the back as well. The only functions that it didn't have were the ability to tweak the zoom in by increments and also to rotate/flip the image. Otherwise this was a very impressive product. When I told them that this monitor would be an interesting Steadicam monitor the looked at me kinda blankly. I don't think that it is a market that they had ever considered. With subtle tweaking this would be a good replacement for an Ultrabrite. Mitch Gross Posted February 25, 2004 Report Share Posted February 25, 2004 It's an excellent all around monitor, but at something like 400 nits, it doesn't come close to the Ultrabrite's performance in daylight. Still, as a general use monitor it's pretty terrific. I recall a pricetag around $5000-$6000. And it's got a great waveform built in if you're DPing as well. No, it's not the Astro. Panasonic came out with their own 8.4" HD 4:3 LCD monitor at last year's NAB. They started shipping last fall and I tested a prototype for about a week on a feature I did in Denver in August. It is much, much better than the Astro screens, even the new one which is much better than the standard 6" that everyone seems to have. The Panasonic is also less expensive than the Astro, with a lot of mounting and wiring options including the option of mounting an Anton Bauer brick on the back. Larry McConkey Posted March 4, 2004 Report Share Posted March 4, 2004 I just had a chance to check out the Panasonic monitor on the new Artemis rig. AbelCineTech supplied it as part of their own evaluation of the Sachtler machine and I am told it will be part of the Artemis demo at Showbiz this week. I was fairly impressed with the monitor, especially with the side to side viewing angle which was without fault, that is, until I went outside. There was almost no discernible image and that ended any interest I had in it as a Steadicam monitor. If Panasonic is interested in developing this monitor and is able to make it sunlight viewable this will be a very interesting possibility. But at the moment, it also lacks anamorphic format which is a serious limitation for film use,. On the plus side, it does have 16x9 for video. The controls are very easy to use and the control panel is detachable and will mount to top, bottom or either side - it could also be velcroed elsewhere. It includes a small waveform inset if you like. It was designed to be used with the VariCam and has lots of readouts specific to that camera. SDI input is what I tested, and there was no discernible delay in the image - a big plus. RGB and SD inputs were also available but I did not test them. If only we could get the brightness and daylight viewing of the Ultrabright (along with its many other Steadicam and film friendly features combined with the great viewing angle of the Panasonic along with an affordable price we would have one monitor that could do it all!!
