FYI to all-

 

At NAB 07 we (the Tiffen/Steadicam gang) went to RED and they let us fly it to get a feel for it. Peter Abraham was able to fly it on the Archer model and I put it up on my new Ultra 2 as well. (Peter, post your thoughts when you get a minute)

 

The camera they had available to fly was not a working model (in terms of video out) but it had all the necessary drives and batteries on board so it was up to true weight (I would guess about 21 lbs). We did manage to take the Ultra 2 with the HDSDI monitor over to one of the other ?working? RED cameras that was set up on sticks shooting a scene. It was set up to display an image on a monitor for all at NAB to see?So? we plugged the HDSDI output into the Ultra 2 Steadicam and it looked great on the HDSDI UltraBright2 monitor. In fact in looked quite nice!

 

The camera we flew had one drive (made by RED), one battery (made by Red) and a prime lens (also made by RED) with Chroszeal LW clamp on 2 stage matte box. The lens was about the size of Cooke S4?s (perhaps a tiny bit larger but not much), but no viewfinder was on board. It was about the same weight as a VariCam with ENG zoom, transmitter/down converter on board (again guessing about 21 lbs). It was very low profile but (this set up) was in a rather long mode, more like the length of a Cine Alta with a Copperhead, Everts or Maranda and a battery on the back. Even though it was set up in that long mode it flew beautifully with the exception of the battery backing up right against my shoulder. The beauty of RED however is that it is totally modular. You can move the battery and the drive to the top of the camera and that would have given it more of an Arri 435 profile (drive and battery rising up like a film mag) thus not as long therefore not hitting the shoulder. Of course that begins to center the weight a bit but I doubt that will be an issue at all. Some other cool things they offer is both 19mm and 15mm rod support for motor mounts, etc. All in all I think we as operators will really enjoy flying The RED.

 

I am not endorsing the camera over any other HD camera but my point here is that it works well on a Steadicam. They were very smart by making the system modular?.as if they had us in mind from the beginning. I think Miko Wilson took photos of a few of us in the rig with RED. Miko if you can post those photos for others to see that would be great. Thanks!

 

Thanks to all of you that stopped by the Steadicam booth and for the Tiffen operators night?it was great to see you all. I missed out on the 2nd night of operators gathering but I heard it was a lot of fun.

I was so bummed I had to leave and miss this! Yes, the RED is very modular. You can also power from the rig (Lemo power in - I think eight pin, but I could be remembering wrong - new cable for us though) and use SD cards to record, making it very light for a running rig. Truly a modular set up. As for " They were very smart by making the system modular as if they had us in mind from the beginning." That's because they did! I'm very proud to have been a tiny part in this. Not tooting my horn here - just saying that I know they were genuinely interested in feedback because I had extensive conversations with them after last years NAB about things to change from an ergonomic stand point (both for Steadicam and for conventional operating). I know they consulted others as well. I appreciate them doing this because there were substantial changes made since the mock ups last year (most notably they have lessened the role of the cage opting to make more attachment points on the camera body). They have a hand held rails system that reminds me of the back rails of an Ultra 2 where the battery and hard drive sit vertically, but can tilt and slide (like the batteries on an Ultra 2). This allows you to change the center of gravity so it sits nicely on your shoulder (yes, I got to try it). Very simple concept that works great.

 

Oh, by the way, it makes pretty impressive pictures too! The short film Peter Jackson shot with it was nothing short of stunning. For those who don't know, it wasn't shot with refrigerator sized prototypes that merely share the sensor; they were shot on two bodies that were in the booth at the show! The short incorporated WWI battle scenes involving lots of gun fire, tanks, explosions, and best of all an aerial dog fight with the cameras strapped to the planes. All shot in two days. An amazing feat for any camera - let alone two prototypes. Says a lot for Jim Jannard that he let them do this. I don't think any corporate run organization would allow this! I tip my cap to the entire RED team.

I am sorry you missed flying the RED as well. We were in and out pretty fast however. It was a mad house down there. We barely had room to even move around...they had to make some room for us. It was pretty funny. I am so glad you talked to them early with advice and even more happy that they listened!!! Sony came by the Tiffen/Steadicam booth last year and asked us what we wanted in a production camera. From that, the Sony F-23 had pretty much all of what we asked for on it (with the exception of the huge power draw-though not as bad as the Genesis but close).

 

The RED will be a great system to work with and based on the image...all I can say is this, "Does anyone want to buy my near mint VariCam?" HA!

No problemo Steve, it was my pleasure helping you, Erwin and Garrett out on that!!

The Red was definatelly the most interesting thing @ NAB this year, but I didn't have a chance to see it either.

But the way things are, we will soon be flying it all the time, so I'm glad it works well for us.

One correction to make from my early posting on Flying The Red...after looking at a few photos I was mistaken that I had a prime lens up. It was a short zoom that was slightly larger than a Cooke S4 prime lens. Amazing that it was that small and light weight. This RED truly could change everything.

 

It is getting very interesting!

That camera is not RED!

 

He he yeah, that's what we need here, one of those really sensible discussions about RED. I'll go first ......That camera must b nuclear powered or somthing it's got a red glow comin out of it! Look! Video is not as good as Film and if you reckon it is you must be crazy! Oh my god it's the end of Days! :o

 

(If you want Hysteria checkout the discussions at the other forum about Cinematography, this place is normal compared to what's goin on over there!)
