Travis Flynn
I’m looking at a used Archer 2 with Volt, G50x arm and an Exo Vest. I’m a newbie getting into Steadicam and figure it would be the smart move to get a more pro rig that can support more weight than the Zephyr. The used kit mentioned above is $25k. Does this seem like fair price? I don’t know enough yet to make a proper judgment call on this and would love a few extra opinions. Thanks in advance! Premium Members Kevin Jacobsen Posted May 21, 2021 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 21, 2021 Fair price with the volt. First rig, skip the volt. It will inhibit your skill set. It may make you appear more capable but you'll lack complete understanding of operating. Two options I see. Go through with the purchase and sell the volt, use that cash for the other accessories you'll need, bits and bobs, maybe a cart, zalex long plate, digital level, etc. Or keep it and use it sparingly. Selling it may give you a head start on some other purchases.
Premium Members Jerry Holway Posted May 21, 2021 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 21, 2021 I disagree. Keep the Volt. Practice like hell without it, but there is zero point in risking a minor horizon flub when on a real job. The point is to get the shot, and get it well. Who cares how on the day? It's your career and reputation for getting the shot, being efficient, artistic, pleasant to work with... and the Volt will only help you. 2
Premium Members Kevin Jacobsen Posted May 21, 2021 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 21, 2021 Well I'd listen to Jerry, he's an OG vet and leads the SOA workshop. As a volt owner, when it works, it's a shot saver and definitely makes shooting days better. As a new op, I'd be hesitant on relying on it early on. Just remove the drive assembly when practicing without it.
Travis Flynn
Kevin and Jerry, thanks for weighing in on this! I’m with you, never want to be reliant on an assistive feature, but would be a nice safety net on pro jobs. The seller is also offering me two days of training if I fly out to pick the unit up. So based on your price opinion, Kevin, I feel like this is a safe deal.
