Please implement a better system for giving permission...

Guys,

we need to keep this forum out of the "commons" and continue to give it value. there needs to be a system put in place so that new members MUST be APPROVED before they can join. they need to perhaps, submit some type of resume or some history so we know they are legit and are actual operators. we dont need a bunch of new people who THINK that may want to try steadicam to sign up.. they can still read the site and search the archives but they dont really need to be a member since virtually everything newbie related is here posted already.

i have seen several spammers just pop up and post garbage which heleps to further erode this site.

please please please please limit whwo joins and make them mod or even member approved! im sure thats not that many signing up daily.. and if it is id be happy to help approve or otherwise help out the mods..

i just dont want this site to become trash...

just a concerned member....

While it's an interesting suggestion I don't think that we need to take it that far. If we had something like that in place when you joined you wouldn't be posting, if we take you as an example.

Erwin, Alec and myself are pretty on top of the spam situation and delete them generally within a few hours of them surfacing. We also then either suspend them or put them on moderator approval. Right now there is one new thread that will be addressed as soon as the forum software does it's upgrade cycle so that the mods can use their "Powers" in it.

Until them people really should refrain from posting on spam threads.

Thanks

damn eric,

why the hit below the belt bro? did i do something wrong to you?

although i dont want to take this thread too far OT id like an explanation as to why you think i would not be posting here? i was on the old forum years before this site turned on.

no need to air our dirty laundry here , so please send me an email off list or PM me so i can understand why you posted that. i thought we were cool?

back on tropic,

i just care about the small community of veteran ops we have left and if we sit back and allow this spamming to happen i think it will drive more away.

still, i dont see why we cant implement a system to grant permission to folks who want to join...

A while ago someone sugested an staggered version of this.

The sugestion was basically:

Anyone could post in "Newbies" - but to post elsewhere you had to get mod approval.

So you're a newb [at least on the board] until the community (/mods) say otherwise)

Danger...!!!

Look out. Jeff Mart just joined today. Do you want to tell a 30 year Steadicam veteran that he can't post? Just because he joined today!

Newbie is not Newbie. There are seasoned operators out there that you guys don't know, doesn't mean that they are newbies... Who are you to decide how is worthy or not?

You can read about my feelings on that topic and where this forum is heading here:

erwin,

i think you misunderstood my meaning...

i just think there should be a flood gate control to keep the bad guys/gals out. i know who jeff mart is.. i know a lot of old heads by name....

im just saying there shold be a way to grant access to users signing up..

i apologize as it seems my suggestion is being shot down left and right... ill just shut up and look from the sidelines...

Marc,

Wasn't hitting below the belt, just giving an example of someone that came to the forum before they were an operator with a resume and asked questions. In your example you would have not been able to ask those questions, since you wouldn't have "Qualified to Post".

The solution is the new forum guidelines that are being drafted that will implore "Newbies" to post in Newbies. The spam will happen no matter what we put in place and honestly it's not that huge of an issue compared to the normal amount of spam that we get in our in-boxes.

i appreciate your reply and your approach to the site. as long as something is being done proactively instead of reactively thats all one can ask of the site...

however, to comment on your other statement, i did have a Resume and i was an operator when i joined up this site and when i was a memebr of the old email based forum. i had access to an EFP system and was using that and what other rigs i could rent, borrow and steal. im still not as high up on the food chain as yourself but after 7 years of operating (3 years pre workshop up to today) i have worked my way up to a masters Rig with a few bells and whistles.. it takes time especially if you dont have any money or a rich uncle... and i was doing that while working a 9 to 5 (non film related) job.

i could have furnished all of that PLUS references if there was a request from the moderator to do so.

again, thanks for the reply and education.. i will see you at cinegear!

Hello guys,

I just wanted to say a little something about this subject.

I'm a newbie. Have my own rig (Archer) w/ full package. Been operating since December. Took a course in October w/ Jerry. But I've been a DP since 2000. Started with camera operating in '98.

I understand Marc's concern about this subject, but as mentioned, how do you decide who's to be "qualified" as an operator. In my eyes, anyone who's operating on a regular basis is a steadicam operator. Specially if you own your own rig. What can be discussed is the quality of operating, but none the less, this person is a steadicam operator.

I've had great value of this forum myself. Most of my topics have been the asking ones. Not so much of giving advice. This is of course because I'm new to steadicam. If one where to exclude the newbies from great parts of this forum, one might end up with operators who learn steadicam the wrong way. And this can't be good for anyone?

I've been active also on cinematography.com for some time. This because of my DP background. Marc's concern is a genuine one as I said, specially if one looks at that forum. Cinematography.com has had a lot of bad advice in the past. This kind of thread has also been up to discussion over there. About poor advice. In my opinion one who's a newbie should be careful about giving advice, at least be very self critical to the advice one wants to give. But when bad advice does come up, the more experienced ones, should quote the specific advice and say that's it's bad advice. This is in my opinion, the responsibility of the more experienced operators. In time, if the same person keeps giving bad/wrongful advice, this person should get a warning from the mods of being kicked out.

But this forum shouldn't be for just the very experienced ones only. I think that would be bad for the next generation of ops. And once in a while an inexperienced op, might just come up with a great idea that everyone else have missed for years.

Just so everyone is clear on this point.

We have no intentions of implementing anything close to what Marc is suggesting.

Instead we are going to suggest that Newbies post in newbies and police from that standpoint.

Hi, Eric.

Just to be clear on something. Do you want us to post in Newbies even if it's a FF or arm question?

Post your question in the correct forum, but first SEARCH THE ARCHIVES there is a very good chance that it has already been answered.

We would also like to suggest that newbies please refrain from answering questions, especially ones that are beyond the scope of their experience, or that experienced/established operators have already answered.

Also please limit the "Me too" or "I totally agree" type of post's as they just clog the forums and search's

"but first SEARCH THE ARCHIVES there is a very good chance that it has already been answered."

I'd add that there is also wonderful information within the archived forums from years past (the forum was run using different software then and separated by the year). I believe that those forums need to be searched separately than this one and each other. Does that make sense? Sorry, it is 8AM and I just got home from work. Ugh.
