Gyros in the age of the Volt

I'm curious if anyone has some wisdom around using gyros with their volt. Shooting on the beach last week in heavy wind without gyros got me thinking...

I've been considering purchasing a set of gyros for a while, especially before the volt. Now that I'm flying a volt, I haven't run into many situations where I need gyros. After last week, I'm considering adding a pair of KS-4's to my kit just to throw on when I need a bit more inertia.

How is everyone using gyros with their volts? Are you mounting them differently than before? Is there still a need for 3 axis gyros? Would love to know what's working before I think about purchasing anything. Cheers!

Hey Luke,

I own a KS-2 and KS-6 Gyro and they work amazing with the Volt!

I almost always use them in windy situations. Add that with a pair of wind killers blocking the wind, and it will make it so much easier to stabilize the pan axis.

I can guarantee you wont regret the investment if you have the leeway.

I have a post mount and a battery plate mount both Anton and Vmount.

Personally, Ive only mounted on the lower part of my sled post so far and never used the battery plate mount. I do hear that the further away from the CG is better.

The only drawback is since there is more inertia, it can make it difficult in situations where actors make sudden unexpected movement and you have to respond quickly. But if you practice enough, usually you get the hang of how much strength you need to put in.

I think the only time you'll need the 3 axis is if you're fighting a hurricane like wind now that we have the Volt. haha

Hope this helps.

I have the 6x6 from my old non-volt mkv/xcs frankenrig. But it's more than you need for the volt. I always like the X style gyros because they are balanced at the factory and it isn't as critical how they are orientated on the sled. Now that I have upgraded to a volt I've been thinking of getting the 4X4 and clamping to my post rather than the AB mount I currently use. When you get a pair of KS4 you need to be sure that they are exactly 90 degrees to each other and that they are the same weight, so you might need to test out different pairs.
