I suspect that the devices that make the most use of the higher voltages are DC motors (which can suck lots of power, as we know all too well). Interesting to see what devices really waste power and how much, and what the design trade-offs are. I know that, for instance, the UltraBrite monitor can run off of 28 or 14 volts, but which actually is more efficient... and by how much? Efficiency is also a function of the battery itself, with bigger batteries (all else being equal) dealing with high amps better and delivering more watt-hours.
