Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted December 5, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 5, 2006 This new "member", "Mondinard" is feeding us with junk (pils, grow your ..) etc. Just want to know if the moderators normally delete this kind of members? He was online while i was there too, must be a person, not a zombie computer I think. should be shot!
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted December 5, 2006 Moderators Report Share Posted December 5, 2006 Rob, Moderators don't have the power to delete members - just posts in some areas.
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted December 5, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 5, 2006 Only Tim can delete members... We moderators are deleting spam as soon as we see it. That's as much as we can do. Talk to Tim. It's up to him. Erwin
Premium Members Jason Williams Posted December 5, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 5, 2006 It's this software to thank for it: hxxp://www.botmaster.net/more1/ (url changed so that it can't be trawled) $400 for a program that takes out all human intervention to posting on forums just like this, and many thousands more. It's a true pain and at this point no real way of stopping it. Jason
Premium Members Afton Grant Posted December 5, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 5, 2006 First of all, I think in the realm of spam and how much we deal with it elsewhere, the amount on this forum is still relatively small. The moderators do a fine job of dealing with it as it arises. I actually get a small chuckle out of it when I read all the posts on gimbals, batteries, brackets, and then there's this lone one reminding me I might not be as pleasuresome as I'd oringally thought. TOTALLY untrue, by the way! There are ways to keep the automated posters from posting. If you've ever seen those text boxes that ask you to type in what you see in the box when you sign up for something. Usually, the text you have to retype is somewhat warped - unreadable by a robot, but fine by a human. That is a good defense method. The other, perhaps more simple, solution I had thought of is in the signup process, ask a very simple question about the gear. i.e. Who is responsible for the creation of the Steadicam? Or, the three primary parts of the equipment are the Vest, Arm, and What? It would be something we would find insignificant, but may be a decent deterrant to someone trying to spam us. Yes, the answers would be easily found, and if someone is willing to do research to get a lame point across that will be quickly deleted anyway, well, have fun with that. If I were building a forum type web site, this is what I would do. Like I said first though, I'm far from making any large complaints. Good work so far, Mods. Best, Afton

Usually, the text you have to retype is somewhat warped - unreadable by a robot, but fine by a human. That is a good defense method. I hate to say it but robots can read those "captcha" images, even when warped - the program I mentioned above can FULLY register to a forum - basically sign up, read the warped image, receive the email and click the link within. This is a HUGE problem - VBulletin is very prone to this problem, as it uses the captcha system - I came with a special system which means you have four images and you are given the answer - you have to click the corresponding image, this has worked for me and I have had NO spam members sign up. I don't know how it would work with this forum software (Invision Power Board), but there are ways around this. Jason
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted December 9, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 9, 2006 the interesting part about the spam is that it almost exclusively uses the Legal/Business Practice section of the forum...hmmm... interesting. Premium Members Imran Naqvi Posted December 9, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 9, 2006 I'm guessing because it's searching for keywords. Can anyone think of a name for that section without using the words "Legal" or "Business"? Could it be that easy?

Premium Members Dan Coplan Posted April 8, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 The amount of spam may be relatively minor at this point but it's a growing cancer and should be nipped in the bud ASAP. I think anyone with any authority on this site (Tim, the moderators, don't know who else that would include...) should have the green light to delete members that are clearly spammers. Can we vote on this? Then I think we should set up a fund to track them down and send someone to break their thumbs. I'm in for $1000. By the way, that Jessica Alba link links to an executable file - beware. Dan
