HI all,

Just had the lower plastic on my 3A vest break in 2 spots not to bad considering its age. Anyone know of a place I can get replacements for this or what does everyone thing about making a copy of it out of 1/4" leather? Also does anyone know what type of padding was used in the pads and were I can get a sheet of it in LA I need to replace these as well considering that most of the padding has been worn away.

Thanks,

Scott,

Got to run out the door in a moment, but quickly:

Contact Peter Abraham. I don't like listing phone numbers of non-dealers/vendors, but his email is visualist@frontiernet.net. He also checks in here a lot.

Anyway, he does plastic vest pieces that are great. Black, flexible yet strong. Far lighter than leather and you don't have to worry about noise, smell, etc. I've had them on my model 1 vest since 1995 and they have been great.

As for foam, he can recommend that too. I use a thin, but firm foam that I bought at a Canal Street foam/rubber place here in NYC.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I have one of Peter Abraham's belly plate repalcement panels and would definitly recomend contacting him, prompt service, fair price. As for the foam, A Foam Mart in Burbank (818) 848-3626 or Diamond Foam&Fabric in LA (323) 931-8148 will carry what you need. I used Ensolite foam to redo my vest and a friends, I think it's what came in the vest when I bought it. Ensolite comes in thicknesses from 1/4 inch to 1 inch. 3/4 inch is what came in my vest but I put in 1 inch in the belly pad, just works for me better, experiment. I recommend washing the nylon shells to remove all the old foam to help ease the insertion ( he said insertion!) of the new stuff. Hope this helps, I'll be glad to answer what I can. Take care, Nick

By gosh, I'm all tingly ! :D

Scott, I can get you a new bellyplate in 24 hours. Email me at visualist@frontiernet.net

And, since this thread is about vest plastics and parts and such, I'll repeat myself.

I have- for about 17 years- made replacement parts for Steadicam vests. This is only those parts NOT made by Tiffen ( or, back in the day, C.P. ) for currently manufactured rigs. Older model vests or custom shaped and hand-cut parts. Each part is hand cut and formed. ( I am proud to say that Ted Churchill made use of a custom-fitted narrow bellyplate of mine, towards the end of his career. ) Each part is warrantied forever. It splits, you get a new one for free. Unless you hack away at it with a razor blade. But, who would do that?? :P

If you need a current factory part, I would urge you to call Robert Orf at Tiffen in L.A. His # is (310) 645-4568, extension 15. He can help you with Master Series/Ultra/Etc vests- all of the current models and makes. Robert is a great guy, knows his stuff and can get you parts in a jiffy.

For older vest plastics, I stand ready to make 'em.

Best to all,

Peter Abraham, E.M.T.
