Hi Jeff

How are you?

The Nexus works well with the Genesis - we had them together on the Panavision stand at Cinegear and it worked and flew great.

This said - I have a design that makes the Genesis much more "Steadicam" friendly - Please email me off forum -

howard@mk-v.com

and I will tell you all about it.

All the best

Howard

Howard,

How long a run time were you getting w/ the PAG 75's. That's really what the Genesis is all about..... Power. And unless you have 14 or 16 guage wire up the post and big connectors like 2B302's & 3's, you will suffer voltage loss. You can put any square box on an X Y stage and fly it fine.

Panavision has put together a great little integral down converter that snaps into the empty mag port. This allows 422 out for the NTSC output and retains dual 444 out to the deck.

Geoff Shotz turned me on to a lovely mod whereby we have an Anton Bauer dual plate mounted in place of the deck and therefore maintaining a fairly good dynamic feel to the camera whilst shedding the 14lbs of the deck. Nice.

Pics shortly.

He wants Panavision to build a Genocide specifically for the AR. I SERIOUSLY doubt that will happen

Why not?

Panavision has been working on a 2nd gen. Genesis for a while (I've heard rumors that it would be called "Exodus", but the negative connotations of that moniker would be just too easy) but I wouldn't expect it any time soon.

I think we will be more likely to see the RED camera come out first, and that looks to be quite A-R friendly...?

Yes I know about all of these - And the battery on to the camera mod is mine, it is what I came up with for cinegear. It makes a huge difference to the way the camera feels on the sled. I flew the camera on the test day before the show and it was not good, so I designed some plaltes and they (PV) kindly made them for me. At Cinegear I had a PAG mount and L95 on the Genesis. It flew great and all the ops (inc Geoff) who flew it said it made a huge difference to the camera. - And it is still lighter than an XL like this.

I am well on the case re all the new kit (inc the genesis, D20 etc.) and watch this space for the new stuff. The Nexus works great with the genesis and even better with my little mod (to the camera not the sled).

Hope this helps, all the best

Howard

So I am wondering, with the "whale tail" battery mount at the back of the Genesis carrying two batt's, how many to fly down below (assuming a 3 battery-configured sled)? 2 should do it, right? One for monitor/video, another for the Preston if one has a discrete system, or simply tied together for sled power in general...?

I do agree that the camera without backweight is a bit funky--I liked it on the first show I did and then grew to consider it squirrely on the second. And of course those f*!@ing cables. Is there any hope of a quick release assembly for the two cables, there must be something that doesn't cause any signal loss greater than BNC's on either end with a barrel in the middle?

Hi Guys,

Erwin will hopefully post some pics, he stopped by the prep.

The 'Whale Tail' works great w/ 2 Dionic 90's = 4 lbs with the hardware etc. Then 8 inc long cable directly out of the Anton Bauer P-tap connection to the Genesis. No voltage loss over such a short cable. Run time = 45 mins, maybe an hour.

In this configuration of course the sled is powered how you want. 2 Dionics run my TB-6, Preston, modulus for the whole day practically.

Then the true test, the whole enchilada..... the entire Genocide, deck running on the camera, Preston, Modulus, TB-6 etc. With the mods that Greg Bubb did to my XCS sled to run unregulated 12v to the 30 amp 2B302 connector, 3 Dionics ran everything for 90 minutes. A pleasant surprise. The weight of the sled? Equal to or possibly worse than a BL. Horrible.

So I suppose its the Whale Tail set up and tethered to the deck and Toaster back pack, unless the shot prohibits the conga line of at least 4 people whereby we would be wrapping the cable around furniture or geography. Then it would be the fearsome wrath of the Genocide fully realized.

Seriously, I've heard of one guy who has done serious harm to his back from carrying the camera w/ the deck on. Then two guys who have had serious accidents trying to move the sled with some pace. One guy just piled into the ground when he stumbled, and killed the camera and primo lens. The other caused serious harm to an extra b/c the mass and inertia were so great that he just lost control of the rig and couldn't avoid the woman. Carrying so much mass, it is dangerously difficult to recover from a stumble or misstep.

Beware. And prep, prep, prep before a job with it.

Couldn't agree with you more Will. I'm pretty sure that the one-piece setup fully loaded weighs as much as a BL4, and didn't we all take a "just say no" attitude to that camera years ago?

Hopefully it won't be too much longer before the flash drive emerges and the nightmare will be over with this one.

Will, let me make one little suggestion, as impossible as it might sound. Try to get production to hire a cable wrangler/utility from the Video world. As we have all seen, loaders and 2nd AC?s don?t work well with wire (video assist guys don?t like to move much either). I think this would be a great precedent to set with this camera. These guys are so good that you really will forget that you are tethered. I have a list of these experts that I will gladly share off forum (both LA and NY). They are all IA 600 and totally professional. Not sports guys, entertainment crew.
