Three new rigs from Tiffen

Hi Dave,

There are basically three new models, with the usual options. The Flyer is designed for weight loads from 4 to 15 Lbs, and lists for $6,495.00USD. The Clipper is rated for 15-26Lbs and lists for $32,500.00 and the Vector will handle weights from 20 to 45 Lbs and lists for $44,950.00. My understanding, from my discussion with Frank yesterday, is that the Flyer is like a Mini on steroids, the Clipper is like a cross between the ProVid and the Ultra, and that the Vector is going to challenge the Ultra. Challenge, not beat. It looks to me like Garrett and the boys at Tiffen have been busy in the back room. The prices look good too.

Disclaimer: This is just my opinion from a 1/2 hour conversation with Frank and the PDFs from the Steadicam site.

But why does Tiffen still only have the Tiffen tilting top on the ultra only?

Does Tiffen think this is their top feature so they will only put it on their top rig?

Very disappointing in my opinion.

But both the Clipper and the Vector are only 2.75 iches wide. I think that makes them thinnest rigs out there.

My understanking was that the new rigs were an attempt to offer scaled down and more affordable rigs for buyers that didn't need all of the features. The motorized and tilting top stage are, as always, available on the flagship Ultra. Tiffen has been open to the wishes of the market place and may be responsive if you request a stand alone tilt top stage, there may be tech considerations that make this a difficult request, you'll have to ask them. They do offer many components now as stand alone and have moved away from the all Tiffen or no Tiffen attitude that was entrenched when the company was CP. In my view the company has remained open to change and worked hard to make improvements as well as keeping an open door and friendly spirit of working together.

Gotta say it's a bit disappointing to see the Provid style arm on the 32K clipper rig. For that knd of money I'd expect a smoother arm. Perhaps I'm jumping the gun here and the arm has had significant improvements, but I'd take a 3A or Glidecam Gold arm over the Provid arm.
