Jean-Nicolas Dorion
Does anyone have comments on Paul Taylor's 5 days Steadicam workshops at the International Film & Video Workshops facilities in Rockport, Maine? It's not very far from Montreal and I'm seriously thinking about going there next June. I'd like to go to one of the next Arrowhead Lake Classic workshop as well... Premium Members JamesSainthill Posted March 16, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 Hey J. N., I know of two Toronto based op's that attended the Paul Taylor workshops in Rockport. One is the very seasoned Michael Fylyshtan who attended the workshops twice back in the early 90's, & the other is David Cain - who attended a couple of years ago. If you need thier contact info, it can be found on their websites. Michael's is: www.steadicam.ca & David's is: www.davidcain.ca I'm sure both would be happy to talk with you about their experiences. Hope this helps, J.St.Hill

Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted March 17, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 17, 2007 Does anyone have comments on Paul Taylor's 5 days Steadicam workshops at the International Film & Video Workshops facilities in Rockport, Maine? I don't know about Paul Taylor's workshop but I'm a big supporter of the International Film & Video Workshops in Rockport; so much so that I personally funded a scholarship for young film students there last year and will likely do so again this year. All the programs are generally well-run and the workshop experience itself is priceless.
Premium Members Afton Grant Posted March 17, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 17, 2007 Few workshops are not worth their money. I attended the Rockport workshop and can certainly say it is no exception. You are "in school" for 12 or more hours per day, finishing the week with more than enough to take home and practice. Paul is an excellent, very experienced tutor. You will not be disappointed. If I'm anywhere near southern Maine at the time of the workshop, I will do my best to stop by. Perhaps I'll see you there. Best of luck, Afton
Premium Members Dave Wowchuk Posted March 17, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 17, 2007 I'll chime in with my comments ... I attended the workshop back in September 2005 along with two other Canadians, Sean Sealey (Toronto) and Patrick Doyle (Halifax) and it was great ... but Paul wasn't there. He ended up taking a last minute gig somewhere out of the country and the workshop ended up being facilitated by Jimmy Wells (Nashville) and Paul's son, David Taylor (Los Angeles). Like Afton said, the environment was great, and the workshop was very, very worthwhile. Dave
Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted March 17, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 17, 2007 I was in Rockport in 94 and had Paul Taylor as instructor, as well as Jerry Hill , the son of Chuck Jackson and some others that i forgot the names of I was there during oktober, the famous Indian Summer, when all the leaves are in shades of yellow and red. Together with the background of this beautiful village and the relaxed atmosphere a great experience!
Jean-Nicolas Dorion
Thanks Rob. Now I can't choose between the June or October one! Just kiding. I can see nice colors here each year too... The sooner the better! Thanks for all your help guys. I made up my mind. Can't wait to get there. I'll try to make it to the Arrowhead Lake next time... Someone else thinking of going in Rockport in June?
Premium Members Brant S. Fagan SOC Posted March 21, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 21, 2007 Ladies and Gents, Having been an instructor at the Malibu Classic, the SOA, and the Rockport Workshops, I can safely say they are all special and worthwhile experiences. Each has in intrinsic values and characteristics. I can report that I have learned more from teaching them each an every time I visit one of these places. Insight comes from many methods and each Workshop has it's unique style and format. You can not go wrong with any of these but you will reap what you sow. Your benefits come from your efforts and willingness to learn from both the instructors' experience but also from your fellow classmates. Good luck. Best, Brant S. Premium Members Peter Abraham Posted April 30, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 30, 2007 Hi all, Having been Brant's Instructor in 1992 when he took his Steadicam Workshop, I can attest to the fact that the man loves his Steadicam J.R. ( Upon Preview, it is incumbent upon me to add that in the ensuing years, Brant moved on from his J.R. and is now delivering Steadicam work of effortless grace and elegance. He still cannot find his Helga. ) Otherwise, I would say this. The Workshops experience is very much a " what you get out of it is what you put into it " kind of event. Whether it's a two-day Flyer workshop or a three day or five day workshop, this holds true. Those folks who come at this event with enormous energy, positive attitude and ability to fall into a good group dynamic typically come out with a terrific workshop experience. It is fair to say that lots of folks remain in contact with some of their fellow students on and off throughout their careers. It is an endless source of creativity for all involved, instructors included. I've taught over 30 Steadicam Workshops, from Rockport to the SOA in Yellow Springs to Malibu, Arrowhead Lake, South Korea, NYC, Atlanta, Tupelo, Boulder, Oregon, LA and points in between. Each event is a pleasure, and frequently new ideas and methods and inventions arise from a workshop. Premium Members Brant S. Fagan SOC Posted April 30, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 30, 2007 Peter-- Just to clarify, it was '91 and remember that horrible full gale that we all arrived in? Yuk. Right on with the Helga, no luck finding that but I did find myself without a trip to California or serious meditation. Why did we have to wear those masks for the Friday Wrap party? Just what is a focus tube anyways? Do ad agancies really get help from them? Best, Brant S. Fagan, SOC Steadicam®/Camera Operator
Premium Members Peter Abraham Posted May 16, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 16, 2007 That is the tube that keeps the shot in focus, silly. :P
