Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted May 19, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 19, 2004 Senate Votes to Halt Runaway Production JOBS Act passes first hurdle, moves to House On May 11, the Senate took a major step forward in the fight to halt runaway production by overwhelmingly passing a Guild-endorsed bill that includes a provision which will decrease the financial strain on mid- and low-budget projects that shoot in the U.S. "This legislation is going to help grow American jobs," said Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.). The Jumpstart Our Business Strength, or JOBS Act, would also repeal an export tax break that the World Trade Organization ruled an illegal trade subsidy ? prompting the European Union to impose sanctions ? and create tax breaks to promote energy conservation and production. The $170-billion measure gained approval by a 92-5 vote. Specifically, union lobbyists anticipate that the JOBS bill will spark growth in film and TV production nationwide. ?With this legislation, our coalition of Guilds and unions have achieved an important breakthrough in our fight against runaway production,? noted Guild Executive Director Bruce Doering. ?Now that the Senate has passed the bill, we?ll be moving our fight to the House. We will be calling on our members to call, email and fax their representatives to support this legislation that will produce production jobs in the US. California?s two Senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein responded to Hollywood?s calls for help and threw their weight behind the anti-runaway production bill. The House is expected to complete work on the measure and send it to Bush before November.

Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted May 20, 2004 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted May 20, 2004 Jamie, Sure thing... Let's keep our fingers crossed! Interesting though, I thought the the camera guild didn't endorse trade sanctions and only endorsed tax incentives? Hmm. Oh well, like Bill Clinton use to say, "If it's a plan that works I'm for it, if it doesn't work I'm against it." Actually I think that was an SNL skit.. but it's still funny. here's another. "Some people say I flip flop on the issues.. well, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't."
Premium Members JamieSilverstein Posted May 26, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 26, 2004 David, With the elections, there is a new world order in Local 600.......... I think that the endorsement of sanctions vs other means of helping fend off Runaway is most certainly up for discussion now. Its going to be an interesting time in the history of 600 for the next two years.
