Premium Members Lars Erik Posted May 30, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 30, 2007 Hey all, just bought myself the new Archos model 704. It's great fun. It's a monitor I give to the director. They have a laugh when they get it. Because when I tell them they can record themselves, by using a sexy 7" touch screen. And after the shot is done they can view it. Either in normal mode or in slow mode... They all start playing with it. Then they find out that it has internet connection. Oh boy, when that happens, they put their surfing shorts on, because they start surfing in no time... No, but really. I'm impressed by this monitor. I've had great use for it so far, and the images on it is very good. And the fact that I can send a wireless image to the director. The shots are then stored on to a 80G hard disk, and then I can send the shots either to a server (great if you're second unit and the director can view the images on internet almost at the same time the shots are done), or I can send the footage to a PC wireless. Dude, that just turns me on!

Premium Members Lars Erik Posted May 30, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted May 30, 2007 Yes it has. 12 frames delay. In most cases is acceptable. But if I had to buy over again, I'd go for the CanaTrans most likely. LE

But I'm working this weekend. I'll check it out. Thanks for pointing it out. LE

Premium Members Lars Erik Posted June 1, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted June 1, 2007 hey eric just used the 704 today. and i can't say i noticed a delay so severe from the archos as you mentioned. i'd say the delay from the 704 is somewhere around 4-5 frames. making a total delay of max 17 frames delay. where did you get the 30-40 frames delay info from? Matt Mouraud
Well I use the exact same set up (with an Archos 500 instead of a 704). Two things with the Boxx that make it actually almost impossible to use with a Steadicam. The 12-frame primary delay. It drives 99% of the directors I work with (mostly for commercials) absolutely crazy. This one computer-geek director loves the fact that it says Digital Microwave. This DP I also work with loves to show the delay to actors by making sudden movements in front of the camera. Then add to that a good 10 seconds with no picture at cam power up (if it's powered by the cam) and you can pack it up. The the director will stand next to you and annoy you at watching your monitor. The only way to use it in an acceptable way is if the video village is far away, and if you don't need cues. They love the picture quality but they will prefer using the analogue stuff with no delay and break-ups than having to deal with a 12-frame delay. Pity though because the quality is outstanding. So I use the Archos straight on the sled.
