sony F23 any experiences

Greetings all

 

Has anyone had the pleasure / displeasure of working with this "camera". Does it have the same power comsumption issues as the Genesis. I will be starting a show with it and was wondering what others experiences with it are.

Can a Clipper 24 with a G-50 arm support a striped down version with a Digi prime? (33 lbs. max camera weight)

I see the body is 5 kilos about 11 lbs but cant get the weight on the deck

Recently I did the Cinematographers Workshop with this camera with Sean Fairburn and George Palmer, and had a good look and handling of this camera, though not with steadicam.

 

I have the manual of the recorder here in front of me, the recorder weights 5.9 kgs/13 lb.

 

So with a total body weight of around 11 kgs, excluding extra's it is comparable with a 435 setup, but the weights are places differently.

With top-mounted VTR it is very high and the CG might be to high too, Back mounted is the way to go, but then you need a good counter balance

on the front side (heavy lens)

 

All in all, the weights are not excessive, but the body and recorder is FAT in my opinion.

 

Power requirements:

Camera approx. 56 Watt on 23.98 PsF, no viewfinder or other attachments.

Recorder approx 60 watt.

 

So a total of around 120 watts, 10 amps constant.

At the workshop, we had very nice and cool looking Anton Bauer Bricks, and i heard from someone that they were actually 4 banks of the Dionic-90 cells in one package. But this might be wrong info.

But for sure an expensive battery pack. The camera was running on for 3 hours minimum, i think.

 

For low mode: the cover plate/handle for the Drive contacts has attachment points for a low mode plate, but the whole construction is a bit weak, in my opinion. I pointed that out to the Japanese designer that made this camera, and he told me now handles and a better locking system has been made.

 

And indeed, we were shown a picture of Dan Kneece with this camera, so he has probably the most usable info.

One more good thing about this camera: it has can output all kinds of monitor signals, in HD and SD, so a normal SD monitor will do already.

Of course a HD-SDI monitor gives better results, and also the frame delay might be a little bit less.

 

I think a saw a slight delay, but that depends on the shooting mode as well, it was not really a problem for Steadicam operating, i think.

 

 

This last picture is with a HD Optimo zoomlens, then the whole setup becomes a beast, I had the "pleasure" to carry it around and I think it weights in at around 25 kgs or more, i had difficulties lifting it on the high tripod............ I should start working out again........... :(

 

And one more thing you can see from this picture is that this camera is in good balance with this kind of lens and mattebox attached...............

Its on a good position on the head, and to get a similar position on the Steadicam , where the CG is about one inch behind the Post, but with a lightweight lens, is impossible. We need to slide the whole camera forward to get a good balance and that might be a problem in some setups, where the sliding plate might hit the recorder part and it might be still not enough forward enough.

 

But I did not try this so am interested if my ideas are correct.

I just ad the chance to fly the Sony F23 at All Mobile Video in NYC today and it just worked!

 

I have a Clipper 24 sled w/7? monitor, G-50 arm, and Ultra Vest.

 

Here is the set up:

 

Sony F23 with onboard recorder (tape in) NO eye piece

5MM Digi prime

4? by 5? clip on Matte box

Bartech

M-One motor

RF links transmitter

Marrell digital level

2- Steadicam Power cubes

 

Sled:

40.5? from bottom of sled to the camera plate

4.5? from top of gimbal to camera plate

1? from top of gimbal to docking ring

 

G-50 Arm

MAXED out but it fly?s here is a shot I?m not holding the rig it is flying

 

Powering seems to be a slight problem. With out the onboard recorder it is just a 12 violt 4 pin XLR but with the deck there is this multi pin that would need to be made.

 

If you have to have a power cable coming off the rig you might as well have 2 BNC?s run to the deck and have some one follow you with it then the whole thing is much lighter.

 

I hope to have the power cable so there would be no wires.

 

I would like to add some weight to the bottom of the sled to make it shorter but then I would need a bigger arm.

Im sure the pictures out of it are great, but when will they learn?? Tape?

 

Sony are still protecting their interest in Magnetic Tape, hence the bulky SR-1 recorder.

Not much use if your out in the middle of nowhere, trying to shoot a running handheld sequence, with batterys, cables and recorders trailing behind...

your sled looks so long you should just put a wheel on the bottom and wheel it around! It's not the tape that bothers me so much, it's the cable/cables one has to drag.

Yes it was a very long sled but I could not add weight at the bottom and still fly it with my arm. If I?m missing something please let me know. I would not like to shoot with that long of a post

 

With the deck on there are no cables. But it seems that most HD jobs want to run a cable off of the rig to monitor in HD so if there is one BNC there might as well be two and knock the deck off the rig all together

 

I whish there was a way to mount the deck to the bottom of the sled but there is an other piece of equipment (a processor) that has to be attached to the tape drive when it is not on the body. It almost seems like there could be some computer cable made to feed from the camera to the deck so you would not need this processor attachment. Maybe run the cable from the rods straight down to the monitor then to the deck.

 

If anyone has shot with this camera please let us know how it went. I was just playing around at the rental house.
