Premium Members Jeff Muhlstock SOC Posted July 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 As much as I hate to do this, I would like to clean out my XCS gimbal. I would love to hear what the latest and greatest lube for this job is. Recomendations? Experiences? Thanks, Jeff
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted July 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 Hi Jeff, I always used Arri High-speed oil, (that's what GPI uses). You can get a little bottle from ARRI, usually for free as it cost them more in paperwork as the bottle is worth. One bottle is a life's supply as you need only a drop per bearing... Or you could just call GPI they... Greg uses synthetic Castrol oil. Maybe the most fowl smell I ever smelled... Hope that helps, Erwin
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted July 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 I use 2 tubes of Lisigav for the good jobs (naked people, golden showers etc...) and hi-speed arri oil for all the rest.
Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted July 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 I use 2 drops of single malt for the good jobs (naked people, golden showers etc...) and hi-speed arri oil for all the rest. Ron, I thought you were strictly a Lisigav guy?
Premium Members Joshua Harrison Posted July 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 Lisagav seems to be gaining popularity these days, quite innovative, it seems to take away that slight itching feeling in the gimbal. Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted July 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 One tube of the 'gav for my gimbal, and another for BJ.
Premium Members Jessica Lopez Posted July 25, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 Lisigav and golden showers. I think I am a little disturbed by this.
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted July 25, 2007 Moderators Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 Jeff, I use the Arri high speed oil as well. CSC sells the bottles (and a nifty needle applicator). Just go into their "store" and they have it behind the counter. I think it was ten bucks or so but it will last forever. I'm out of town now, but when I return (late August) I'm goona clean mine. If you don't get around to it before then, we can do the back yard gimbal cleaning over beers. Cheers, Alec

As I am afraid of changing the "feel? I may just take you up on the "back yard gimbal cleaning" ... and beer. Funny, after all these years and 4 gimbals later, I have never opened up a gimbal. It might have been that old photo of Ted with little silver balls all over the place and his tweezers that has left me scared for life. Premium Members Rich Cottrell Posted July 26, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 26, 2007 Jeff and Alec, If you do end up doing a team cleaning, how about we video this and put it onto Afton's Steadishots site? That would be awsome, because I too have never been or seen inside a gimbal, let alone cleaned one. Even in my Model 2 flying days, I was blessed with a clean gimbal. so what do you think? rich
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted July 27, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 27, 2007 That were the times of non captured bearings in the early Model 3... I have taken my and other Gimbals apart that many times... I think I should start to do the military drill with covered eyes... maybe not.
