For all of those that have flown the Genesis:

How does it fly?

What should I be aware of?

What is the weight?

How is the on board recorder?

What is the battery consumption like what will I need to to use it with my Pro Bat. mod. 2?

What problems have you encountered?

Does it have a built in down converter?

What power plug does it use?

? ? ? ? ? ?

Thank you,

It fly's like a BL4S with out the weight shift of the mags. It's a heavy bitch and you may need a longer baseplate to get it to balance depending on how you set the camera up.

If you fly it with the recorder expect a weight in the 48-55lbs range depending on the lens. God help you if they want the 50mm Primo. Without the recorder you are looking at 37-46lbs again depending on the lens.

To power it off a PRO you need to use at least 1 hytron 160 and a dionic 90 or two hytron 160's and have Panavsion make you the PRO power cable. it takes power from both the camera battery and the AUX battery and parallels them together. Even then if you are in one piece mode don't expect more than 35-45 mins of battery life. if you are runing in two piece mode get a onboard battery plate and run a hytron 160 on the camera. Make sure that you get low cycle batteries from panavision and by low cycle I mean less than 50 cycles or the batteries just won't last.

Make sure You get the active SDI Box. It includes the downconverter. Do not let them saddle you with the everitz outboard D/C it's a royal POS and constantly goes down.

Have Panavision build all your power cables. If you are going two piece mode you are going to have to use SDI jumper cables. Panavision is sending out a mogami solid core thin cable and that's what they really want you to use. I built a set of HD-SDI jumpers that use a stranded center conductor that is very flexible and actually got panavision to approve them. (I do sell them so contact me off list for details)

I need to dig up some photos that I shot on the pilot I did with the Genocide to help illustrate some of these issues.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

There are a few pictures on my website. Here

To all who responded,

Thank you, I was hoping that there might have been some more operators that have used this camera since the earlier posts and would be able to give any anecdotal feedback of changes that they may have made to better use the camera to suit their needs.

Thanks again to all,

Sure. I think Will Arnot had posted as recently as last month about this. It seems like the only changes in the last six months has been the coming and going of the twin battery whale tail...?

My guess is the only major change we'll see with this particularly model will be an onboard flash drive, and probably after that a MKII chassis.

How does the Genesis Fly in Low mode? Has the inverted image setting worked fine or is the low mode bracket from Pana necessary? How does it feel in Low Mode in the one piece set up verses the two piece setup?

What are you figuring into your weights? The body only weighs 13ish pounds as does the recorder, even factoring a lens, clip on mattebox and accessories you shouldn't even hit the lighter side of your estimates. Even so it is a pig with the recorder on and it seems to be better for everyone (except maybe the grip carrying the recorder) to fly a cable to the deck.

No it doesn't. not according to the two scales we used. My numbers jibe with Will's numbers and Charles's numbers.

There are also some very good reasons to fly the unit in one piece mode.

forget working for scale -- anyone who puts a 50 lb plus camera on their sled should get the crap kicked out of him...not only by the camera's wieght but by the rest of us. Even a G2 conversion kit with a 50mm primo is 39/40 lbs!! Maybe we should have a "blown disc award" from the guild? Remember back in the day when we refused to fly BL4's because they were too heavy? Ahh those were the days!

Ron, I am very pleased to report that today, on a feature in LA, one of the evil Genesis cameras was destroyed by a charging bull! They let him out of his pen and he turned, jumped over a fence and charged directly at the camera and sticks and "took it out". Hit it so hard it's hairs were embeded in the glass of the lens. I can only surmise that Ted Churchill has been reincarnated as a bull in California and finally had the opportunity to do the right thing with this camera in the name of all the poor steadicam operators that must fly that pig in one piece mode. Apparantly some unlucky person drove up in a red pick-up truck just after he smashed the camera and he proceeded to scrape the entire side of the truck with his horns. Ole! God knows what the bull might have done if it was the "Red" camera.

Lawrence,

You are absolutely right. I was working an additional camera on that show today. Thankfully, the camera in question was unmanned and locked off. The bull ran right at it (from what appeared to be about 50 yards away). The deck was damaged but was able to be hooked up to the A camera, and the footage was played over and over. It was stunning. The bull ran in a direct line towards the camera, jumped up and almost out of frame, and landed squarely on the camera. The camera then fell on its side, shut off for a second, then restarted. People could be seen in the now-perpendicular image running for their lives. It took about 15 minutes to wrangle the bull while the entire crew hid in a nearby barn. Scary.

The camera got sent back to Panavision, and as Lawrence reported, the 11-1 had hair in and on it. Maybe they'll put it out to pasture...the camera that is. Couldn't resist.

Funny!!

That's a great idea! I'll talk to the guild treasurer about getting some awards made/purchased for this award event..

ok, i'm back. (see how quick that was)

Sadly, since the SG doesn't charge membership fees nor do we sell T-Shirts as a fund raiser so we have no money. We are in the Red.

Perhaps Tom Gleason from www.Cinewidgets.com could make the awards out of let over scraps from his machine shop?

I think we should have different categories for the different types of injuries sustained while in flight (Blown discs, ankle/foot injuries (I'll have to self-nominate for this one) etc.

Another interesting category would be for the length of time it took to recover from said injury. (I have to give credit to CP for that one!)

That is all.
