I had escaped flying this pig for too long...I was skeered after hearing all the bitching about it here on the forum (but after flying that F-900 abortion for 4 months on Jericho, how bad could it be?). I had the good fortune of being able to use the new flash deck/solid state recorder today on a camera test. It's really cool and makes the camera very steadi/handheld friendly. It was nice to only have to fly 1 cable, a thin bnc to the villiage. The SSR-1 (Solid State Recorder) has a built in down converter, uses about half the power, it's nearly half the size and weighs 8 lbs less than the deck/down converter combo one has to normally fly in one piece mode. It's dimensions are 5" x 5" x 9.5" (for those without ruler in hand...pretty much the same size as a TB-6). Having an older Pro sled (and the old style ni-cad batteries) I had power issues -- so I hot-wired a hytron 140 to the bottom of the sled (thanks Jeff Clark) and used the pigtail we all already know about at the top. After the shoot I pulled the fully built camera off my sled and onto my scale and found it to be exactly the same as the Panavision XL I've been flying on October Road -- 33 lbs. Here's what I flew today: Genesis body/power cable, SSR-1"deck", panavision dovetail/Pro plate, low mode bracket, 2 preston motors/cables, Hill bracket/2 rods, Cine-tape horns/display/cables, 35 primo, clip on mattebox, arf, 2 filters (a round pola and a 4x5 85). A very good experience -- thanks to the folks at Panavision who showed up to help me out, especially Dom. I hope they can crank out a bunch of these -- we're gonna need them! Is that a power cable that taps off 2 of the lemo outlets on the top stage? Is this SSR now actually available for rental and if so how many? I guess the theory is that since the beastie is pulling close to the max rated capacity of the smaller lemo connectors (rated at 10 amps). This splits the amperage draw between 2 lemos/4 wires. As far as availability, this is the only working one in the universe. But 20 more are being assembled and should be ready sometime in late Feb/early March. Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted January 17, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 17, 2008 yeah, wireless would be pretty cool -- my HD experience is very limited, so flying with a cable is the most painful thing about it (power draw being a close second having an older battery system). That's why it was so important to me to be in "1 piece mode" with this camera. I was dreading the weight/power draw of the standard tape deck, but even more the additional cables and wagon-train of people with the deck separated and following me with the backpack. Incidently, the weight with the SSR was a pound lighter than the camera in "2 piece mode" (uding a hytron 140 on the back with the down converter). So I saved a pound and a cable. When Dominick and John Galt showed up with a little black pelican case and claimed they would ease my pain, I had my doubts (when they opend the case, the theme from 2001 played and smoke came out). I was also worried there would be issues with such a new gadget. Everything went very smoothly during this short, trial run. I was pleasantly surprised that the SSR-1 began recording instantly as well as instantly replaying takes. The test shoot was a side by side test of the Genesis and the Melinnium XL shooting side by side fast action is sun/shadow. It will be fun to see the results. I wish I had snapped more pictures, but we were in a hurry and had little prep. Would have been nice to have some side by side pictures next to the XL in handheld mode. Here's a shot that John Galt sent me that shows the drive next to a 400' mag -- it's obviously about twice the width, but several inches shorter.
