Sweaty Gimbal

I mostly use the Sachtler Artemis EFP HD rig, and the gimbal is pretty good. My one issue with it (or with my hand) is the machined metal is somewhat smooth, and within minutes it seems to get a little too slippery for my comfort.

Any material I could put over the gimbal to give it a bit more grip? I dont want it to be too tacky or sticky though.

Just wondering if anyone has ever dealt with this same issue...

thanks!

Try some tennis racket grip tape. Good for the cold as well.

I bought my rig from Robert Starling, and when I got it he'd done a GREAT thing to the gimbal grip - he had wrapped it with tennis racket grip. At the bottom he taped it with electrical tape, careful not to stretch the tape (if it stretches, it comes off eventually). I LOVE the feel of it, and with my thinner Steadicam post, it makes the handle a bit beefier and easier to hold. For details, I'd go to the source - Robert. But I can attest, I never have grip problems with the mod he did.

Thanks for the kudos Jaron! Actually, I use bicycle handlebar tape made by RAV X. You cut the handlebar tape at a very long diagonal, wrap it back on itself and continue to stretch the BAR TAPE tightly around the gimbal grip. You cut the final end at a long diagonal as well. You then finish the wrap with a few layers of electrical tape that you DO NOT stretch.

Regarding gloves, I was shooting a Today Show special segment earlier this year for the Sporting Good Manufacturers Association and one of the the featured products were fingerless gloves called Bionic Gloves. After the shoot the guy gave me a pair and they work great for me outdoors in the cold. They're very form fitting and the palms have a very thin padding of some kind of no-slip material. I think you can buy them now at Sports Authority.

The bike tape thing that Robert talked about is definitely a way good idea and the most affordable, but being mr. smart guy that I am machined an aluminum knurled collar to fit over my EFP . . . .Daaa, should have done the tape way more affordable, but mine looks cooler Robert . . .LOL . . . .

Tape away Anthony . . . .

You're the style-master here Rob... my hands are way too soft and girly to work with knurled aluminum. BTW, nice Steadi / zoom work on the show the other night taking Howie out to the Limo. They do an exceptional job of hiding you in the switching. Sorry to wander off topic a bit.

Anthony: Someone definitely makes a handlebar tape that is "carbon fiber'ish" style but I don't know what the grip is like. Try calling Rich at Pro Cyclery in Las Vegas, he's the owner and used to have that tape on his bazillion dollar carbon frame by Fondriest / F1.

Rob, just out of curiousity, what does the collar you machined to fit around your EFP gimbal look like?

------------------

Ummmm, it's black . . . .LOL . . .

It looks just like the typical collars you would put on the masters or pro they just don't fit over the EFP so I had to have one made . . . still should have used the tape . . .

I'm in Telluride skiing for two weeks, but when I get home I can send over a pict.
