Feature needs to be expanded

When a topic gets over one page long a "Go to first unread post" message appears allowing you to go right past the old postings. Can this be made available all the time? It would save a lot of redundant scrolling down.

Have you tried the "View New Posts" link at the top of most pages?

Yes, but this takes you to the first (oldest) message in the topic, not the new ones.

This forum still need to be able to email us the post. This is a GIANT step backwards.

Is there a reason why things changed?

I wish the forum would email us the actual post. I don't usually have time to go on the computer and sort through everything. I usually read them on my phone at work and respond either from work or when I get home.

I agree 1000%

It takes too much time to find the new post's.

Why did this change the last system worked damn well for all those years.

this subscribing thing is a drag and takes FOREVER.

What "subscribing thing"?

If you check the "Remember me?" button when you log in, the the forum will remember you on subsequent visits and you'll never need to login again from that computer.

You don't even need to "log in" to read posts, only to reply.

As far as emailing message content goes, well then this wouldn't be a forum as much as it would be a mailing list. And this is a forum. A community.

Also please be aware that this web site is sustained with the little revenue that the site generates from advertisements. If web traffic goes down, the site gets more expensive to maintain.

I'm thinking about ways to offer premium services on this forum on a subscription basis to those who don't mind spending a few bucks. Email notifications with message content formatted for easy reading and custom formatted for portable devices is on the list.

I have held back posting in here as I felt I should give the new sight a try for a few weeks. Well, to be honest, I dont like this format at all, way too clumsy getting around, all this glitz but just a pain in the neck to simply read unread posts. Youve lost me here... I need a place were you can simply click on and see whats new at a glance. I simply dont have the time or desire to weed through all the repitition. I am sure this sight has taken a tremendous amount of work to get here, and I apreciate that effort, but I strongly believe we have lost sight of the basics. You need to have a simple and familiar way of seeing folders of post and an even easier way of marking them. This sight just requires way to much jumping around, it shouldnt be that much work, we are going to loose significant members that have points of interest here. The "old Style" gave us the ability to see new posts and who posted them on a "front page". This was great, as many authors who offer so much quantity but less quality could be avoided. Now I am stuck scrolling indefinately until I reach something of interest. Readers should be able to get to there points of interest with greater ease.

Very dissapointed,

Jeff Muhlstock

not to mention SPELL CHECK!!

I agree with Jim regarding the "first unread post feature." Can this be added to all the "View New Posts" strands rather that just the ones over one page long? I assume people realize this is the quickest way to see new posts - one click and they are all there. I actually like having the old posts just a scroll up in case you want to double check something. In the old forum, this was impossible. I think this forum is much better once you spend the time to learn the features. It lets you post pictures and diagrams right in your message rather than having to host them elsewhere. I agree that an email feature would be nice, but keep in mind that these pictures would be lost unless they were included as attachments. This is why in the final months of the old forum, I nixed my email subscription and began direct visits to the forum. For those without high speed internet, using a phone, etc (for me, if I'm in a hotel with a lap top) it is MUCH better to be able to do it through email though. Flash sessions (a quick sign, down load of email, sign off) are really a must when one is stuck with dial up.

Regarding spell check. I use a Mac with OS X so spell check is built into all applications. Otherwise, just cut and paste from any word processor. I didn't really like the message area on the old forum anyway for creating posts.

On the whole, I like this new site. Hidden email addresses are a must. I just added forsale@floatingcamera.com for a recent classified ad that I posted only here and the SOA site. Sure enough, I've begun receiving junk mail to it, Ugh.

One more thing. Still would love to be able to jump to the first unread post regardless of length of strand, but in the meantime - a useful tip: you can skip to the last post in a strand and scroll up to the first one you have not read. Simply click on "last post by" over to the right. Clicking the name of the person however brings you to their profile.

It would be great if you could find posts by date.

I tried to check the posts from the last 3 days because I was working and I was half way through when it told me that I had read all posts.... and then crashed...

When I logged in again...

I had to check all topics to find the ones that I had not read... imagine down the road when we have 10 times more posts and someone is gone for a couple of weeks...

Please explain the steps you took so I can attempt to duplicate the problem here.

Also, what do you mean by "crashed"? Was there an error message?

There are about 8 million ways a given piece of software might crash, so it really helps to expain as many details as possible.

Tim,

Once you hit "view new posts" it automatically marks all the new posts as "read", so that if you don't read all of them they won't show up as new the next time you log on. It would be nice if we could mark the posts "read" as we go, that way if we don't read all of them at one time we can come back and check them later without having to sort through a bunch of posts that we've already read. That is the thing I miss most about the previous forum.

Thanks
