Someone just round the corner from me who was one of the first UK RED owners has got a very early reservation on this setup. When it finally arrives I'll do my best to give it an "Afton-Quality " review for you guys :)

I heard that the View Factor was originally supposed to be an accessory to be purchased with red but there was a feud and View factor pulled out and went solo. Does anyone know if this is true?

The first bit was true as far as their motors are concerned but there absolutely was NO feud. It came down to the pricing. Viewfactor wanted to make it available to a larger market at an amazingly low price point. But refusing to compromise build quality or reliability, manufacturing costs were only able to be reduced to a point. Given that they have to make some profit off it, it did not make sense to sell it through RED with even the small markup for RED reselling, as that would've brought the price above Viewfactor's target pricing.

This is good for the customer - the direct selling model minimises the cost for us!

But are they selling right now, at this moment?

Who has his/her hands on this unit and can give us some experience info?

Well, yes and no, - you can order one...but as far as actually getting one?

Yeah, this is where things get quiet. The owner/designer/builder/shipper Curt is reporting on their forum that they were working on a unit to show at hd expo - don't know if they made it. "real" ship dates are due this week. It really has been frustrating following this process, and to some extent it makes them seem incompetent. On the other hand, I think this is more an effect from having so much information - I mean if you look on their site you can see when the parts are being ordered, what engineering problems they are running into - stuff you would normally never hear about. Instead, you would forget about it until you actually saw one. That being said, I am, like Rob, waiting for a human being who spent good money and time waiting on this thing to tell if it's worth it!

They have a new video out now. I'm yet to be convinced enough to buy this system, although parts of it looks promising.

One note, the run/stop button seems to be very sensitive. And in addition to that, it's close to the focus wheel on the T/x. Creating the chance of the focus puller to accidentally switching the rec off during the scene.

Anyone have any other opinions?

Its usefulness to me is dictated by the facial expression a focus puller I've never met before would have when I handed it to him at the start of a long day.

In the UK there are still plenty of FPs who go "what the f**k is that?" if you hand them a BFD, and there's nothing more tedious than listening to the FP bitch all day about how you don't have a Preston. (I'm starting to seriously suspect that what makes you buy the Preston in the end isn't any performance or ability boost but rather to get the FP to shut the hell up...)

However a lot of UK RED owners are considering buying the Viewfactor setup so potentially the level of field experience with it will go up pretty quick.

It's a large and undeniable factor, Ed, and one that I think we have alluded to many times over the years. Beyond the "shutting up" part, there is the more insidious aspect where a focus puller being asked to work with anything they consider "less than" can a) use that as an excuse if there are focus issues and B) simply block you from being hired again by complaining to the DP that your equipment isn't up to snuff. It's almost impossible for either of these to happen if you have a Preston.

Judging from the video it looks like the remote doesn't have end stops on the focus knob. I assume that it will keep your focus marks when you go past the end and back, but it seems kind of strange. If you go all the way around does it jump from one end of focus to the other or does it get confused?

I gave it a spin at NAB. Nice design, compact on the camera, and the controller's ergonomics are good. The biggest turn-off for me is what Jess pointed out: the controller does not have hard stops at the ends of the focus range.

To answer your question, Jess, once you go out of range, you continue to go out of range in that direction. It does not suddenly snap to the opposite end of the range if you go too far. This also means that once you've gone out of range, you have to dial the controller back the same distance to get back in range. This keeps your marks on the controller accurate, but I agree that it's very odd. The connection that the BFD has to the lens feels much more real.

I love that it auto-calibrates, but this also means that you can't set it up to use only a portion of the focus range (from what I saw), as you can with the BFD.
