Pulling the "Oh Jesus" Cord

FYI-

For many years now, the Tiffen vests have had snaps to prevent any inadvertent opening of the vests. The vest must be set up to release whenever one is working in a dangerous environment (stunts, water, rhinos, etc.).

In 20 something years I've come close to pulling it two or three times, but set it up to work maybe 10 to 20 times, and might have refused to do a shot several times if I hadn't had the emergency release on the vest. I have few memories of specific instances, in part because I had no worries doing the shots and nothing was required.

Ya the vest I had on didn't have the O-Shit cord and it was straight to the bottom of the pool . . .

Dec. 3rd, 4pm 2003, 40 degrees and the water was about 45 . . .brrrrrrr in Las Vegas

WOW... how long did it take to get loose from the rig and do you think the rip cord would have help you in a more timely exit?

Also, I would love to hear about your dealings in recovering your gear with the insurance claim. Did the Production Co. handle it in a timely manor or did you have to use your own to claim against? Maybe under a topic in Legal/Business. (But please link to it)

Alright . . .I'll talk about it . . .

Jerry is right, but this time it was my fault.

I was already taking off my vest and the director asked for one more shot, it was one of these home and family makeover shows. I was supposed to walk out the back french doors to reveal the new pool that had just been refilled one hour before, walk through the patio and do a 180 to the other side of the pool. I told my AC just get my cases ready I'll do this shot real quick and be right back. MY MISTAKE !! It was 4pm and I had a 6pm flight so I was in a rush.

All was good, come out the doors . . . through the patio and start walking around the pool and I noticed some pool stuff in the way keeping me from walking around to the other side of the pool so I just pivoted on the corner and was going to show the rear of the house from that angle. Well . . . .my right foot heel went, just over the edge in the corner of the pool, enough to throw me off balance and fall backwards. Since I was still 90% out of the pool I pushed the rig to my left, in hopes to get the rig to go to the cement deck of the pool. My left ass cheek hit the side of the pool and bounced me into the water, since I was already holding the rig over the edge of the pool, the post hit the edge with enough force to sever it just above the monitor leaving all the weight on the top of the rig. The camera hit me square in the forehead . . . . Ya I can hear all of you laughing, thanks Eric for bringing this up . . .LOL . . . all the pieces and me all hit the bottom of the pool. Fortunate for me I went out the house right instead of left because I ended up in the shallow end, so after squirming around and getting over the initial shock of being underwater with a rig and camera strapped to me I realized I was in the shallow end so I was able to just stand up. I picked up the battery off of the bottom and put it on the camera and there was just enough electronics left to get the tape to half eject and save the tape.

If I had hit my right ass cheek on the side of the pool I would have just fallen on the deck . . . .so my fault and funny now, not so much then. You should have seen the huge bump on my forhead . . .LOL . . .

so the wet gear gets thrown back in my cases by my AC while I have to sit with the medic for 30 minutes. I have to get to the airport because my flight is leaving at 6pm and I am going on vacation in the morning to Mexico for Christmas and New Years, remember its Dec 23rd. I tell the production to bring the gear back and drop it off at Tiffen for evaluation we'll be back after the new year.

Fast forward three weeks and the production company says we need a rig in Texas for the next two months, is yours ready? I said I got home yesterday and the gear should be at Tiffen. Nope, the gear has been sitting, wet, in the cases in the corner of the production companies office, so I called a friend, bought his EFP and had him send it to Texas.

Then It was time for insurance. Lots and lots of paperwork and requests from the insurance company, but after 8 months I finally got paid for the rig. The Production company never denied having to pay for it they were actually very helpful, it was the insurance company people that made me jump through hoops.

So there you have it . . . .The Rob Vuona Pool story and the worst part of it all was that my Palm phone that had all my info dates and numbers in it was in my pocket and now gone, and I hadn't backed it up so needless to say i started the new year out on a really clean slate.

Ok so just when I thought I would stop hearing about this, now I will get it from all you guys . . . let the games begin . . .LOL . . .
