upgrade from PRO GPI regarding HD-SDI capabilities

Almost all of the music videos that were shot on 16 are now on RED here in Montreal.

Did 4 of them in the last 2 months and one in 35mm.

I have shot my last feature with a Sony F900. I am going for another feature in november shot in RED.

HD / Digital cinema (RED,genesis,D21) is giving film a hard time and that is why I bought a Boland HD LCD to take care of those jobs.

I am just annoyed to still have a BNC cable going from the camera to the LCD on my PRO sled.

Is there any news from the GPI crew about a future update for our sleds regarding HD signal going thru the post? I would send my sled tomorrow for such an upgrade.

Tiffen and Sachtler are offering HD solutions already.

So anyone in the loop regarding a future update from GPI ?

Thanks.

No but I have talked to them about it before. I have the same situation and hate the cable running down the sled, in fact, I usually prefer a converted signal through the post to an HD signal outside of the post. Obviously my first choice would be an HD signal through the post.

I've looked into having my sled modified but there doesnt seem to be any really good option.

If you find something, please post it.

Hi Frederic,

I also have a pro rig which I bought from Mike McGowan. When I updated my battery stage to accept

anton bauer batteries, I had Terry West rewire my sled to accept an HD signal. At the same time,he added a bnc out in the front of the battery stage.the new pro battery stage does not have a bnc out.

It works great. Terry West's number is (310) 374-5711. Hope this helps you out. Rick

Hey Rick!!! Sounds like the sled is getting uprgaded!

So a question about the rewire... As it is, if I plug an SD video signal into the topstage, it makes it through the post and out to my monitor through the 7 pin lima connector. Now, with the mod you did (had Terry do) if you plug an HD video signal in the same BnC input on the topstage does an HD signal make it to the monitor or did he put in a seperate input on the topstage?????? Also, did you upgrade the monitor to an LCD?

Hope all is well,

mm.

The HD-SDI Loom

As you all know by now, Steadyrig are in the process of manufacturing rigs. One integral component of this process is the design from the ?ground up? of the loom. Because of the ever increasing demands of digital and HD-SDI we have invested considerable time researching this in anticipation of demand.

Our original intent was to have new looms manufactured for our product. Today?s post by Frederic has made us aware that we can help out here. It appears our new looms will solve your current problems with HD-SDI.

We have decided to offer the new looms to you, as a solution, and we will order replacements from our supplier when necessary.

New Technology, like HD-SDI, is difficult to research and it has been hard to locate reliable information and a qualified manufacturer. We have selected a manufacturer who is certified for ?Mil Spec? quality (ISO 9001) and we have placed, and paid for, a considerable order with them.

As the loom has been designed for HD-SDI specifically ? our manufacturer has had to tool up just for us, this has lengthened our lead time a little.

We expect to receive our first batch in about three weeks, whereupon we will conduct a series of tests (both inhouse and independent testers) to ensure our standards have been met by this manufacturer. Assuming the results are positive we expect to be available to ship the looms before Christmas.

The higher bandwidth demands of HD suggest that any cable would be more prone to external interference than SD (or analogue). Until our testing is completed and we have had sufficient use ?live? in the field, we are not in a position to fully guarantee the performance levels. We will keep you posted on this.

Later, we will post a list of ?local? technicians who can install the loom into your equipment.

As with all Steadyrig products, we are determined to supply a product that will meet your expectations of reliability. Our component selection process ensures your equipment will perform as you demand in all environments.

All new XCS Ultimates are coming from the assembly line with HD-SDI down the center post also all in the field Ultimates can easily be retrofitted...

Still don't see the reason for it as there are no good enough HD monitors out there yet that could rival my Green Screen...

Oh well, as long as you have your choices, right?

Hey Mike,

Terry made the connection so it will be the same from the bnc input out of the top stage as it is with

the mod he did at the front of the battery stage. There is not a separate run.It has been replaced so it will accept ntsc and hd with no problem.I hope this answers your question. rick

when pro is going to evolve with a revolutionary idea for its equipment, that lately follows equal or I to mistake

I'm guessing the vast majority of pro owners use green-screens and shoot mainly film. So that's who George gears his equipment for. Perhaps with the few after-market "fixes" in the works he won't have to offer it?

What is the advantage of having an hd signal to the monitor (from a guy with very little hd experience)?

I'm on PRO #3. I shoot about 50% film and 50% hd and that number seems to go up (the hd number) every year. I traided in my greenie on an 8.4 hd monitor. There are a few reasons...

First, it can work with an hd signal. It doesn't happen a lot but you do get hd guys that show up without a down converter so you can't see with a greenie.

Second, it is in every way a far, far, far superior image. You have a screen that's almost double sized and it's in color!

Third (and if you already have one this isn't an issue) you can get 5 boland 8.4" hd monitors for the price of one greenie and still have a few grand left over.

I almost feel guilty talking about non PRO products... I've had a PRO since 1998 and their equipment has literally made my career. It always works great and they are always right on top of any repairs you may need. They offer great advice and generally have the best interest of their operators first. I can not say enough about how much I love the gang at GPI and how fantastic their equipment is.
